I am setting up my Dillon 650 and am attempting to set-up my first reload...ever. I have some Montana Gold flat nose 200g jacket and some Zero 230g FMJ bullets. My reload data is very straight foward on the 230g. fmj.
Speer data says:
Unique start charge 5.5g max 6.5
Lyman says:
Unique 5.9 start 6.6 max

Now for the 200g flat nose
Speer says:
Unique start 6.5 Max 7.3
Lyman does not list a flat nose but a 200g HP:
Unique start 4.0 max 6.5

You can see the Speer max is the same as Lyman's start load. I don't want to make a mistake here. HELP!!! Thanks, Sammy

I use the Ken Waters "Pet Loads" book for my final reference and have not had ANY problems with them.

He says 6.5Gr Unique under the 200.
A low speed 5.5Gr Unique under the 230.
He also says that 7.0Gr of Unique under the 230 will be a maximum (MAXIMUM) load.

I use 7.5Gr of Unique under a 185Gr HP for about 960fps. Quite accurate.

Have fun, stay safe, set up your machine ONE stage at a time :D

Start 5.4 grns. unique with 200 grn. bullet.
Start 5.0 grns. unique with 230 grn bullet.
Work up from there, Unique burns cleaner the closer to max you get.

Sammy, it wouldn't surprise me that the major difference between Speer and Lyman loads is the OAL listing for the particular bullet. I've not had any problems using Speer or Lyman data. Pick one, start low and work up!

I load the Zero 230 Gr JHP at 1.245 O.A.L. with very good results. Very accurate bullet. I generally load any brand of 230 FMJ's at 1.260 0.A.L.

I have not used Unique with them. Pick a charge somewhere in the middle of all the data, differing on min's and max's though it is, and work up from there.

I have used a lot of Speer data over the years with good resuts. They use real guns to develop loads with. :)

Thank you all for the help. I loaded 50 230g Zeros with 5.5 of Unique and 50 more with 5.75 of unique. OAL of 1.265 which was half way between the Speer and Lyman manuals. I am going to load 50 more tomorrow with 6 grains of Unique and make a trip to the range to test this weekend. Happy shooting!! Sammy

I've used up

about 500 of 230 gr Winchester FMJ with Unique 5.9 and any large pistol primer, OAL 1.245 with excellent results. Loaded another 500 this week. That load should do in the low 800s velocity.
