Need Help with gun identification

Hello,
I was hoping someone would be able to recognize this handgun and tell me what model it is? A friend of mine sent me a few pictures however I can't tell what model it is based on the photographs. He thinks it was purchased new around 1972. Please help.

I forgot to add this

It is a 38 special 5 shot. Serial number is AEW66XX. I left off the last two numbers.

Maybe a guess? Could it be a model 36?

5 shot = J frame.
.38 special = Chiefs Special Variant.
Blued plus external hammer = Model 36 Chiefs Special or Model 37 Chiefs Special Airweight.

I can't make out the barrel markings. If it says Airweight its a Model 37, if not then its a Model 36. Airweight has an aluminum frame, the Model 36 is steel.

That serial number dates to late 1984.

If it is a model 36, what would be a fair price for it?

To me it appears to be a model 36 S&W. The smith logo looks faint or smeared in the photo. I thats logo if faint or smeared them there must have been some serious restoration and bluing on it. there should be some clear markings on the barrel that also identifies it. If its been restored that will lower the valur of the gun.

Doesn't appear to be polished or re-blued to me.

And according to the AEW66XX serial number you posted?
It was made in Nov. 1984.

And it will be clearly marked with the Model number if you open the cylinder and look inside the crane cut in the frame for the Model number stamped there.

I am going to look at it today and I will find out for sure what model it is. I think it would make a nice gun to add to the collection. I have seen prices range from 250 all the way to 550 for a model 36. Thank you all for the information.

Turned out to be a Model 10

It turned out to be a Model 10. On the inside frame it is stamped MOD 10-7. On the crane it is stamped C24 then below it is 33008. What does the 7 stand for? Also it is a 6 shot not 5. One other question, what is the C24 and the other numbers 33008?

-7 was the 7th. change in the Model 10 incorporated in 1997.
It consisted of a change in the location of the gas ring from the yoke to the cylinder.

The other numbers inside the frame are meaningless assembly numbers used by the factory to keep all the fitted parts together during & after finishing, as well as I.D. some of the workers who fitted it.

Do you think I can shoot +p out of it? I know it does not say it on the gun. The gun feels solid and tight. What do you think it's worth?

Yes, you can shoot +P all you want.

It's a modern S&W K-Frame.

They eat +P for breakfast.

The price/value will vary in different parts of the country. This is a model 10-7 I purchased last week for $385.

I have a 2.5" model 66-1 (.357 mag, stainless steel K frame), but I REALLY want a model 10 or 15 .38 snub.

I bought it. Paid 350 for it plus a bunch of 38 and 22LR that the owner wanted to get rid of. Fired it a few times with snap caps, great trigger. Can't wait to shoot it.
