With all this talk about the sunset I've started thinking about getting an evil assault rifle. Something in the $300-$600 range. I'd like to get something that's unique, as opposed to say an AR or AK. Thoughts?

Saiga?!!!:barf:

Been there done that; wouldn't recommend it unless that sporter grip happens to work for you; didn't for me.

Vepr-K in .308 maybe, if 15 or 20rd mags are coming if not the 7.62x39 version will do nicely.

But you don't want to go AR or AK variant.

Your price range limits things also.

If you don't mind it being a pistol caliber how about a HK 94/MP-5 clone?

That's a bit different and there might be one or two versions in your price range.

Mine is gonna be a S.A. SOCOM-16 M1-A with a folding stock, eve if I gotta re-stock it myself.:)

ArmaLite AR-180B.

Note, if you're a lefty you might get pinged with the ejected brass, unless you make a case deflector.

Armalite AR180B..... it uses M16 mags as well, so mags are cheap and plentiful. But it's not an AR-15.

I'm in the same boat myself. Although not in your price range, I'm trying to decide between a DSA FAL or an AR platform. Decisions, decisions....

Depends norton, if armalite comes out with a folding stock flash hinder bayo lug version of the AR-180 I would recommend it over some lower end AR's.

The 180 would use the same mags but be just as accurate and reliable and have superior features.

I know that the AR180b is superior in the sense that it is less prone to fouling due to the gas system....but in what other ways is it?

I am looking to buy just one EBR and I want it to be "the one" that I keep without feeling the need for an upgrade. A price in the low four digits isn't too much of a problem.

The 180b's that I've seen (and shot) seemed pretty nice, but the flexibility of being able to use the various uppers on the AR15 design has its merits. But....for the difference in a couple hundred of dollars, I can buy lots of ammo and practice.....

And those DSA FALs are awfully eeeeeevilllll looking....

Have you seen one of these in the $600 range? If so please let me know cause i'll snap it up ASAP!!

A CAI G3/CETME clone is in that range and certainly a little different from the run of the mill AR/AKs. If you are willing to look closely at what you buy and take a chance, they can be great rifles. CAI has a bad QC rep and for good reason... but not as bad as many would say. Get the G3 clone if you can, less trouble with parts compatibility. Cheap mags too. The ergonomics ain't for everyone though.
