I recently bought a Ruger 22/45, which is a really fun gun to shoot, but a bear to reassemble after stripping. I can break it down in two seconds flat, and putting it back together is also quick, with one problem: 9 times out of 10, the hammer strut doesn't seem to engage/seat in the mainspring housing properly during the final step of assembly, so the bolt will only open half way.

What's the trick to getting it right the first time? I've followed the instructional manual verbatim.

Thanks for any help.

I am assuming that it breaks down like the MKII Ruger. If not, excuse my ignorance. If it does, then hold the pistol barrel up as you insert the mainspring housing in the grip. Observe the hammer strut that is dangling just inside the frame. Align the strut and the top of the mainspring as you reassembly the mainspring housing.
