I purchased a SA 1911 GI several years ago. I could never hit anything with it and put it away for a few years. I rediscovered the pistol, and sent it off to Novak and had them install sights, and lower and flare the ejection port. (Big applause to Novaks for a quick turn around, and a nice job)

Success! I can see the sights and get a good group.

However, ejection did not work so well. Was getting bopped in the forehead by empty brass. So I put in a Wilson Extractor and did my best to tune it...

That helped, but the brass is still hitting the ejection port (just not my head). The pistol is ejecting OK, just not consistently chucking my brass in a single location. It is in a 45 degree radius to my right. Not the famous pile of brass I keep hearing about.

Should I file on the original ejector and attempt to tune it? If so, how should I proceed?

Should I put a new ejector in? If so, any good recommendations?

Or, lastly, is just leaving well enough alone the way to go?

Thanks for reading, and any useful advice.

usually lowering/flaring the ejection port plus proper extractor tuning resolves brass to the face.

make sure the extractor isn't too tight. no need to filed it, the wilson one's already come bevelled.

did you also fit a new firing pin stop plate? SA 1911's are notorious for loosely fitted stop plates that cause the extractor to clock (or twist inside the channel).

you should always fit a firing pin stop plate when replacing an extractor, my friend.

i recently fit a stop plate, plus wilson extractor to my SA as well, and it works perfectly as the extractor does not move at all.

Call Cindy at SA on Tuesday and she will get you up and running. SA has a lifetime warranty that actually is a warranty!

they'll just mail him another loosely fitted firing pin stop plate. they're MIM manufactured without any machining in the process-and they always mold them undersize to reduce labor costs involved with fitting it tightly.

don't you hate 1911's, doc? lol :)

FMJ,

Thanks for the note on the Firing Pin Stop. I did purchase a new one, (Brownell's home brand) but it was more loose than the original SA was.

Probably should go ahead and order the oversize stop plate and try that also.

yeah, if it's looser, it definitely needs replacing. no worries, just send it back to brownells. they have great service-they'll give you a refund.

get the wilson bullet proof one. that one's oversized, and had to be fit in all my 1911's. it's $20 on midwayusa.

just use a mirrior, and some 600 grit sandpaper to file the side that the extractor is on. then use 1500 grit to smooth it out when your almost done.
