I have a Springfield GI that has been having some ejection issues. I noticed last night that the extractor has a fair amount of play in it - I am able to rotate it back and forth like the fit between firing pin stop is a bit sloppy. This being my first 1911 I don't know what is normal, sooooo.... how tight should the fit be?

I have ordered a Wilson extractor, Brown firing pin stop and an extended ejector. I figured between one or all three new parts I should be able to get my GI running perfectly. I smoothed out the ejection port, rounded the edges of the extractor, made sure the tension was correct and bought a couple of Wilson mags but I'm still getting at least 1 FTE in every 100 rounds which is one too many for me. Ejection is also very erratic sometimes hitting me square between the eyes .

It shouldn't rotate enough to see. If it rotates much it will eject inconsistently.

If you didn't specifically order an oversized firing pin stop don't be surprised if it isn't much better than what you have now. I like the EGW oversized firing pin stop.

If you want to be done with extractor problems get an AFTEC, fit it and be happy. Fitting it is just beveling the edges of the firing pin stop so it can move back and forth. It won't lose tension, the body and hook are bigger and stronger than a normal extractor too. They are expensive, but they are worth every cent.

For standard type extractors SV is as good as anything and better than most.

Thanks for the reply HSMITH. No, I didn't order an oversize stop. Maybe I'll get lucky and the parts will have closer tolerances - if not I guess I'll be going shopping again.
