Need some advice on the H&K P7 Line up

Hey guys I thought i would post up and get some feed back on my situation.

I have been looking at the H&K P7 line up (P7, P7PSP, P7M8, P7M10, P7M13). I had it set in my heart to pick up a P7M8 for CCW use and after reading up on it some more I saw that the P7 PSP seemed to be a better deal for an actual carry gun.

As we all know H&K no longer makes these so the results in picking up one is a) either buy a nice used one or b) pay a HUGE premium for a NIB one thats just been sitting around as a collectors piece. Personally I just plan on picking up a nicely used on. So here are my questions:

1) What are parts availability on these? Just want to make sure I can repair it if anything breaks.

2) Im new to hand guns, so what should I look for as far as wear goes on internals? If I plan to have the gun refinished by Robar is this something I really need to worry about?

3) Any good places to pick one up besides here on the forums or on Gun Broker?

Some parts are easily available and some aren't. All are expensive. Hk can and does do repair work on them, at a price of course.

The P7 is not and easy gun to look at and guess usage. The finish holds up very well and the steel is very tough, therefore a sightly used gun may look like a heavily used gun. The state of the gas piston and the amount of carbon on it gives you some clue. Does the barrel look well cared for, is there any rust anywhere, does the slide operate freely and easily, does the slide lock back on an empty mag and also using the manual slide lock? Does the cocking mechanism offer some resistance, but then hold the cock with very little effort, does the trigger feel crisp? Is the gas tube clean? Are the chamber grooves clean?

3) Any good places to pick one up besides here on the forums or on Gun Broker?

CDNN had them, many retailers sell them, Auction Arms, Guns America, as well as Gunbroker. HK Specialist and Top Gun had them too.

What about refinishing? If I planned to get it refinished should is it worth buying a A rated one over a B rated one?

That would depend on whether or not it actually was one of the P7s rated. Those are all police trades. And it would depend on the individual gun. The A-B-C rating were supposed to be based on wear and usage, not cosmetic looks, so if you plan to refinish, buy the best looking gun on the inside and pay little attention to the outside.

Several years ago one of my PSPs had some problems and HK-USA replaced parts no problem.. and that model has been out of production for quite some time.

If you're going to refinish, there's no reason to get a high graded finish one.

The biggest problem I have found with the P7s is the heat build-up. It isn't condusive to extended practice sessions. They are great handguns; I just shot one of mine two days ago.

Yea I heard a lot about that, but I have my Sig 226 for range use. This would be primarily for carry use.

The A B and C ratings were not specifically about the external finish, they were the internal mechanicals.

The LE trade-in P7s are a great value...I wish we could get them in CA

The grades are ratings for internal wear. I've seen pictures of "Bs" that looked better than "As"

People tell me they've had good luck with CDNN, but the sales people on the phones never even lay eyes on the gun you're getting. Someone in the stock room just pucks one up and throws it in some bubblewrap before it goes in a box to be shipped.

the preferred refinisher on "Cult of the P7" is Fords and the preferred finish is Hard Chrome. The other provider used to be Tripps, but he got out of the hardchrome business when his CobraMag business took off.

If you are looking at electroless nickel, I'd consider CCR before Robar...just for their better customer service

In my opinion very good prices are $499 for a C grade, $599 for a B and $699 for an A. I've seen each of these prices in the last two years at either CDNN or Topgun on the German police imports, and they tend to sell out pretty fast. I bought a $699 A grade recently from Topgun, told a buddy about it, and he got one of the last ones just a few weeks later. In my experience prices on Gunbroker run higher to much higher.

Don't forget that magazines run around $60 when they're in supply, and higher when scarce, and factor that into the price of the pistol offered. Also, the cleaning tools are important, with the takedown tool necessary to remove the firing pin bushing, and the cylinder scraper necessary for a proper cleaning. Right now scrapers are very hard to find. The cylinder brush is nice, but a .270 rifle brush will work.

HK itself still services P7's. I broke one of mine a year ago and HK did a suberb, quick repair at a reasonable price.

NP3 is a great finish, one of mine has it.

Get one, you'll love it, but be warned they are addicting.

I thought the mag were down to $50...either way they have to be the most rugged mags i've ever handles

I misplaced my striker bushing tool ages ago...I just use my thumb

My original P7 did not come with a cylinder scraper...I bought it new when they were selling for $400...and it only came with the cylinder brush (.270"). I later picked up a scraper when the after-market ones came out. when I used it, there was hardly any built up carbon. the important thing about cleaning is not to round off the rings on the piston...don't over clean

i passed on an almost brand new two tone P7 for $750 because of the HK ripoff parts prices, and the fact that you can almost fry an egg on it after after several mags.

Both Top Gun and SPC are both out of stock and sell them at the same price (about $700 for A grade). I wish i could find someone with them in stock at that price.

Unless you're OCD about it, the B grade guns are the best buy and the C grades can be very nice is they are inspected before purchase. Just mentioning it is you want to save some money

I would be willing to buy a B grade one if I could find them in stock for around $500. All the ones I find in stock seem to be C Grades for $500 and B grades for $1000. If thats the case Ill just wait for Top Gun or SPC to get more in stock.

I paid $400 for my original PSP and kicked myself when a year later H&K made a big LE push that offered the M13 for $378.

a few years ago, when NJSP traded in their M8s, I got one for about $600

If I could get the current PSP into my state, I would have likely gotten a couple instead of my Springfield EMP
