Need some advice

I am with cornman here. If your Grandfather is the gun guy in the family, work with him to buy what you want, and leave it with him to use at his farm till you reach the age where you can do more as you like.

Good idea, but I don't get to see him much, as he lives 120+ Miles away, I would be there every weekend if permitted.

Your ramble seems to indicate that you're a reasonably smart 15 year old and that's further evidenced by your willingless to ask for advice. Use that intelligence to read extensively on the pros and cons of gun ownership, getting multiple viewpoint from both sides. Armed with that knowledge, you can counter all of their misgivings and hopefully change their thinking. Good luck.

Good ideas, and thanks.

Where do you live? In my state a young man is required to take a hunter safety course before he is allowed to get a hunting license.

Yep, you're doing a lot more shooting than I was at 15... I came from a family where my dad was indifferent and my mom was mildly anti, so "owning my own firearm" was out at that time... all I had as a kid was BB guns. I started buying firearms at 20 years old and am self taught.

I know it sucks now, but my advice is to bide your time a few more years, shoot what you can now, and start collecting when your parents aren't calling the shots and paying the bills.

One day the script might be flipped, and you might be able to teach them something. The whole time I was growing up, my dad owned one .22 and one 30/30 levergun, and we went to shoot them once a year at the most. Well, the last few times my dad has visited me, he's toured my "gun room", and recently bought one of my handguns I was preparing to off load; a P226. (Above the objections of my mom, but like I said she is really only mildly anti, so she'll get over it. ;)) I'm looking forward to teaching him the basics on how to handle and shoot it.

With the screen name devildog I have to wonder about the other areas of your life.

Are you into goth? Do you dress in all black? Do you play violent video games for hours on end? Do you hang with the outcast kids at school? Are you in or do you wear gang colors? Do you dress like a wanna be? Do you have anger issues?

If you do I could understand your parents concerns. Step back and look at the rest of your life. What kind of image are you portraying?

But on the other hand, if none of these apply to you and you are respectful to your parents and adults in general, do good in school and so forth then I would echo some of the advice you have already recieved.

Sit down with your parents and discuss the issue. Be calm, don't get overly emotional even though this is your passion. Review with them the other areas of your life where you are being responsible.

Make the offer to seek out formal safety training and even some advance courses if it would make them more comfortable with the idea. You may want to offer to take on a part time job to pay for them yourself. This shows a certain level of maturity and would let them know you are serious about this lifestyle and it would also relieve them of the burden to pay for your hobby.

You may want to have your grandfather sit in and listen. He may have some wisdom to impart on your behalf. At the very least you will probably be more comfortable knowing he is there and supporting you.

Good luck and let us know how it goes!

P.S. I owned guns and started hunting rabbits when I was 14. Trust is a big issue. Show your parents you are trustworthy in "ALL" areas of your life and they will be more receptive to your request.

Those are some pretty wild assumptions to make based on a screen name...

Is there something about dressing in black, hanging out with "outcasts", or playing violent video games specifically that should preclude someone from shooting? I did two out of three at some point when I was a kid, and still love some MW2 or GTAIV.... doesn't get much more violent than that.

Heck no, Heck no, No, Im not even allowed to have video games, No, No, and No, "Devildog" is a nickname given to Marines, I plan on joining the Marine Corps when I am older, and I think you are being just a little bit judgemental...

Assumptions?

Did you read the entire post?
:scrutiny:

I was not passing judgement, I was simply asking questions trying to get him to look at other areas of his life that may cause his parents some concern about his maturity level.
:)

Oh yeah, I agree with you, I just had to get off the computer earlier, lol,
I'm a pretty mild kid for my age, Christian, and Homeschooled living in the Mountains of Tennessee, where everyone has a huge safe fulla guns, cept us.

I have my hunter's safety course completed, and I need to renew my hunting fishing license, Hunter Safety written test: 98 out of 100, (missed two about TWRA funding, not actual safety questions) and my instructor thought I was one of the best shooters there, after shooting either a 12 gauge, 20 gauge, or a .22, which was required, my instructor Charlie Archer, let me shoot his SA .44 Magnum, boy was that fun.
