ok i have an old over grown loggins road that is more of a shooting lane than a road that i hunt deer on

about 3-400 yards down it there is a creek so i was thinking about putting a salt lick near the creek and setting up about 50 yards away

or should i set up closer to the begining of the road?

the deer cross at all points so there isnt a defined trail, i went out looking for scrapes and such today and i was finding them on the ground and on a few trees every 30-40 yards

the area is mostly tall pines and high grass there is a secton of trees about 20 yards across then you reach an area that about 30-40 areas and is cleared

what is my best bet for my stand

first check your local and state laws. Hunting on a salt lick is illegal in many places IME. If you notice traffic going to and from the creeks edge on the trail I would hunt the trail, not the creek.

i already checked the law im fine as long as im on private land and im not hunting bear

and the creek is the only natural source of water on this part of the property the next in 3/4 of a mile away

If you are gonna be making short shots, play the wind!!!
If you can set up down wind of the critters it would be best, if that is not possible I would move back farther from the target.

z about the farthest i want to go is 100 since im using a .30-30 its zeroed for 75 right now

should i set up mid way between the begining and the creek?

Hi. First Post.

Assuming the legality of a salt lick, is that considered sporting? Also, what about ground-shooting quail, partridge, etc.?

I'm new to hunting, but I'm presently of the mind that I'll not ground-shoot a bird.

Sorry for the thread-jack.

sea

this is an area that i know i travel im not using it as an attractant but more of something to get them to stop moving so i can take a humane shot
what state?

chances are you wont get the chance to shoot many birds on the ground out of trees maybe but not alot off the ground since they stay in high grass the only bird i will shoot on the ground is a grouse, a turkey, or a crow

welcome to the forum

Dude, are you looking to put in a tree stand? If that is the case, you should be able to put it closer to your 50-75 yard plan. If hunting from the ground, I usually try to hunt down wind when possible. Often times when uncertain, just try something to get a better idea of what works, then adapt. I'd go set out there in the morning and see what happens, set it again in the evening and see if that is different. Armed with that info, adapt the plan. Sorry, not a lot of info provided I know. Stay within your "comfort zone" for shooting distance and watch the wind. Good luck and keep us posted!

Are you limited to one stand? If possible I've found it best to have one stand for morning and another for evening. Looking into the sun gets old quick. Having more than one stand available also lets you hunt the wind better, which as others' have pointed out can be important.

Deer generally don't treat salt like regular feed, like corn or apples. It may get them to pass through the area more frequently but from watching this for quite a few years, you are probably furnishing more salt to all the other non-game critters in the area than you are to the deer. Personally, I like helping all the critters out.

Ground shooting birds (other than turkeys) is a no-no.
