SORRY, BUT more lee setup questions.... added in place of first post.......

thanks so much for all your help guys, instead of starting another thread, i figured i would re-use this one. since its the same.....

double disk setup....kit...
i was needing to purchase the double disk kit, for .223 charges, but saw that it just came with longer screws,(6/32) and more disks. i have 8 disks, and dont need anymore. is there anything else that comes with the kit that i couldnt get from the store??? i think i see some sides that go inbetween to make up the size of the disk, but could i just make some spacers? do i need those specific side pieces???

will the double disk setup above, throw enough powder to load .308's, or do i need the "PERFECT POWDER MEASURE" (that mounts to the bench), and makes you load the powder sepreatly? can this be mounted over the press? (i have the 4 hole turret press.)

thanks guys, brian

You might get something from their videos online, I liked them:
http://www.leeprecision.com/html/HelpVideos/video.html

You can get complete (as complete as if you'd bought it NIB, anyway) instructions at
http://www.leeprecision.com/html/instruct/index.html

The disk thing is ok, but I don't use the disks anymore. I bought their adjustable charge bar which lets you continuously vary the charge that it throws, instead of picking whatever discrete disk hole sizes you have. The chart of data that is in the instructions tells you how many grains of different types of powders you should get each throw with each disc size, in theory anyway. In my experience I found that whatever kind of powder I used, the thing dropped less powder per pull than what their chart says.

Anyway, try the videos and instructions and see if that helps. The Lee instructions are pretty well-written, I thought.

The Lee loading data suggests a charge cavity. However, use this as a starting point. For Unique, after weighing a few charges to start, I'd always move up one or two sizes. Other powders vary as well. I like the cavities, because for a given load I record the cavity I used. When it comes time to make that round again I'm ready to go. (After checking weight initially of course).

If you don't know which cavity to use, throw a few and weigh them. Keep a record and you'll be able to repeat easily.

Yes you will need the rifle charging die for 223. You will also need the auto disk riser to keep the auto disk from hitting the safety prime. The auto disk riser will work on your rifle charging die and pistol charging dies, I move mine from die to die. Make sure the tab is in the disk right so it will move the full cycle. Also make sure the hole in the disk lines up completely over the drop hole into the die, I will try and get some pictures. As far as which size disk look at the chart and go one size larger and check that on your scale. If your powder isn't listed pick a cavity that you think will be close and adjust from there. Always check on a scale until you get the desired charge weight. A scale will be your best friend and it is a safe practice to get into. Don't short stroke the handle and when you want to change a turret raise the ram a few inches before you try to turn the turret by hand. Those will keep you from screwing up the ratchet piece. It's a very easy press to use and I think you will be very happy with it.

rusty... thank you so much. i have the same setup you have there. i think all i need now is a rifle charge die, and a couple more turrets to set up my other dies in. the only other thing i think i have to get is the parts that will allow me to stack the powder measure disk's, so i can reload my 308, and 7mm rem mag. this press seems really nice, and i got it for an excelent price. lets say, all that for less than a brand new 4 hole turret press/die package form midwayusa.com!!!!!:D:D

i recently purchased a 4 hole turret press, used, it came with 45 dies, a powder measure, and a lot of disks. along with 4 different primer inserter things.

If this "primer inserter things:" are metal, those are called lever primes. If it's the plastic tray with a chute and a "clicker/inserter" sort of thing, it's called a safety prime.

(this is my first progressive style press)

Congratulations on joining the joy and agony. grin

i was wondering how to figure out which disk you need for the powder measure. i have the chart that came with the measure, but it dosnt say much, and dose'n't include all the different powders i have. dosen't say how to even set it up?

If you have the Lee manual, it lists some, but not all powders and some, but not all, of the corresponding disk size to powder weights. The best way I've found is like Rusty, to figure out load weights of various disk hole sizes is to select the low end of where you think you need to be, then work your way up in sizes through a disk from low to high checking with a powder measure and taking notes. Once you've done that once, you can easily go back and repeat things.

will the pistol powder charge die work with .223s, or do i need the rifle charging die. anything else?

You'll need the rifle charging die.

is it okay to use different manufacture dies with this setup?

Yes, they'll work fine. But be aware, you'll probably find the Lee dies work as good or better than many other brands in progressives and semi progressives. Long term, you may find you mix and match dies for a specific load situation. But just starting out, I'd advise just buying the Lees, unless you pick up some used dies in a deal or something. The Lees really work great.

or do i need some kind of adapter?

No adapter needed, but you'll need the Lee lock rings, because most other lock rings are too big to fit on the Lee turrets. But those lock rings don't cost much for three.

is there any good sites, with pictures, or videos, with how to set up, change and use the press??

www.leeprecision.com

Utube also have folks posting good vids, but I'm not sure of the website.

anything i should be aware of with this press to make it flow smoother?

1. Remove the worm gear, (the "driveshaft" in the center) and polish the edges and remove any burrs on the tip. Use fine sandpaper or an Arkansas hard stone. All you want to do is "break" the sharp edges off gently.

2. Remove the top half of the ram (yes, it unscrews), lower the ram as much as possible. Then take a round file and knock off any burs around the edge of the casting.

3. Disassemble the linkage as much as you can and flush it out with WD-40 or brake cleaner to remove any machining grit.

4. Reassemble everything and put lube lightly around the linkage and shaft with a light machine oil (3 in 1 oil or similar) or gun oil, whatever you have on hand.

5. Where the turret rides, grease extremely lightly in the steel portion with a lightweight grease like Tetra gun grease or other synthetic grease.

6. Adjust the turret advance with an empty turret so that when you operate the press, the turrets just manage to make it into the "locking detent" position. When you add dies, the extra weight of the dies will cause the turret to center perfectly in the locking detents without slipping past no matter how fast you operate the handle up and down.

Hope this helps,

Dave
