I recently purchased a Savage bolt action rifle in .308. Matt blue finish, with the plastic stock. The model number states that it is the Model 10. For $300, I purchased the rifle, what are claimed to be Leupold rings and base, with a Harris bipod.

What is a wee bit confusing though , when checking the Savage website, is that there are only 10FP models listed, and nothing shown as a Model 10 only. Is this an earlier model that was replaced by the 10FP? Anyone have any background on this?

Thanks,

Let me see if I can explain. This is the short-simple version.

Just like Remmy's model 700 where most of the recievers are marked as 700 but there are several varients ADL, BDL, Sendero, and such, they are all marked the same.

Sav does this too. Model 10 means short action and 110 means long action. But they also will have varients, FP, LE, ect. They also go one step further and have m12 & 112. To confuse things more, they have ad a few style changes over the years.

To help identify yours, do you have a pic or two. Is you stock plain synth or could it be a McMillan or Choat? What is your barrel contour? Floor plate y/n?

Iether way, the action is pretty much the same on all the models and your should proove to be quite accurate when tuned in and the right load developed. All three of mine are.

OK, here's some more info for you.

First, on the Ser. No., unfortunately I'm at the office now, but will include that later on today.

Second, the rifle has a 20 inch heavy barrel. It has almost no taper to it.

Three, there's no floor plate.

Four, I'm assuming that the stock is Savage issue, since there is nothing that I can see to identify it as either Choate or McMillan. It has the appearance of a standard sporter stock. I'm not knowledgable enough with these stock options to know them by sight.

I am assuming from what you are saying that the 10FP models aren't marked FP, or FP-LE?

Unfortunately, no pics, since I don't have a digital camera just yet. Shopping for one, but haven't found anything cheap enough at this time.

Thanks for the info!

Sounds alot like mine, I have the 10-fp, .920 heavy barrel, old trigger, and a synth black stock that looks just like a standard wood stock.

yes, you are ocrrect, it should only be marked as model 10. It is the differences that make it a 10fp or 10fp-le.

As for serial #, don't worry about posting that. nothing I could gather from that anyway

what you describe sounds like a 10 FP-LE1

unfortunately the truly distinctive "FP" marker has been removed from the last few production years...

for awhile the 10- and 110- FPs had a laser etched bolt that along with the savage indianhead logo read "Tactical" or for a year or two "Tactic" (when "tactical" become mildly taboo as a marketing byword for awhile) now it seems they're back to having the same bolt finish as the rest of the line, ie a laser etching of the indanhead followed by "Savage" or "savage arms"

if everything else about this gun is good to go, start making plans to scrap that stock..... Bell & Carlson must have made a deal with tupperware or Rubbermaid to get the formula for the resin used to make that thing, it's just about the most flexible factory synth unit i've ever come across.

do a search on "Savage Stocks" adn read what comes up, somewhere in all that there is at least one god rundown of the decent aftermarket choices out there.
