Helping the out of state family of a deceased friend clear out his gear. 2 items I'm not familiar with are old Mauser 98s. I gather, like most milsurps, they were once sold by the case lot for ridiculous prices but that has long since dried up. There are very few to sample on GunBroker ... especially not in this kind of rough condition.

I have 2 to price ... both 1936 and apparently Yugo altho there are no markings that would prove that. Both stocks are beat up but will come out fine with a little care. The butts actually look better than any of my K-31s. One was lacquer coated (since half peeled) and maybe reblued at some time in it's life - barrel metal looks pretty good but the action and bolt are shiny bare. The metal on the other has a few freckles in the 70% bluing and polished bare barrel bands. Both are import marked, #1 somewhat more obviously than the other.

There aren't 2 matching numbers on either gun. Bores are dark but no evident pitting and there's rifling visible. Triggers are shockingly good. Sights are OK.

If you can take the time, pics are at ...

#1 - slightly better wood, albeit some lacquer on it, bluing in better shape

#2 - rougher wood ...

Any thoughts on a fair market value would be appreciated. The immediate family will likely sell them off to friends and family that shoot at some percentage of whatever I deem "fair market."

So, what would Gander Mountain try to charge and, what would a sane person pay if they were seriously in the market for a '98 and were willing to do some of the common milsurp restoration work to end up with a shooter?

TIA

Thanks ... I just ran into the CheaperthanDirt ad a couple hours ago. That about solves the pricing issue.
