Here is the problem. I went to the local GS and there is this old Tang Safety model 77 Ruger 270 staring me in the face. The blueing is like new, the stock is an aftermarket synthetic (may be a B&C) and the gun has the sweetest, smoothest aftermarket trigger that I have had the pleasure to squeeze. To add spice, the action is glass bedded with the barrel floated and the former owner had a KDF Muzzle Brake installed and had lapped the scope rings. This is a really nice piece of equipement. $420!

Now someone talk me out of buying it before I have to sign divorce papers.

If you want the rifle and can afford the rifle then buy the rifle. On the other hand if buying the rifle is going to cause a monetary family problem then don't buy the rifle. Sorry I do not know (and do not want to know) your finances or spending agreements with your wife. :)

As to divorce? The old saying has it "I got a gun for my wife, best trade I ever made".

Ron

Sounds like a great gun that may have been shot LOTS. I'd check the bore, if it checks out and your wife's understanding buy it. If it's gonna cause friction ... DON'T. You'll never fully enjoy it.

Those older rifles were hit or miss in the accuracy dept. Some great, others had to have a new barrel to get them to shoot.

You never know, but there is a real possibility that somebody kept throwing money at a gun trying to make it shoot and finally gave up.

Nope..........

I am the last person on earth to talk someone out of buying a gun just ask MY wife. Good luck on that one.

I know a good devorce lawyer if you need one. (LOL)

I may have fibbed a little bit. My darling spouse really doesn't care about my gun addiction. I can get away with alot.

JMR, you are so right about the accuracy in the early guns. I have had one that shot great and two that were just so so. I took some work to iron them out. (Hey, that's the fun part.)

Ford, I checked the bore first thing. Looks really good, but I don't have a bore scope.

Thanks for your thoughts guys. If I get it I will check it out and show you the pix.

The only Ruger I owned that shot well was the 6inch bull barreled SA 22 rf semi auto handgun. The others that I had were pretty, smooth actioned and would have probably have been more accurate if left unrifled. A lot of folks will say some Ruger barrels are pretty "iffy".. I got the "iffy" ones. All have gone down the road now.

My Wife Lets Me Buy What I Want...

...But she shoots a Ruger M77 Ultralight .243, and when she first tried my M77Mk II .270, she overlapped the first 3 rounds at 100yds. -This was her second time on the range, brand new shooter. So, when she put the rifle down, she looked at me and said, "I love this rifle! Can I have it?"

9 months later, I walked in the front door with a rifle carton. She said, "What's in the box?"
I took out my new Savage 11 in 7mmWSM, handed it to her, and she said, "Does this mean I can have the .270?"

All kidding aside, we shoot 4 Rugers. My M77 tang safety is a .257 Roberts, and there are the .243 and .270 M77 Mk II's; the 4th is a M77/22H rechambered to K-Hornet. We like Rugers.

You do have to "fuss" with them in many cases, to make them accurate. My wife's ultralight was good on the "cold" shot, and from there wouldn't group better then 2-1/2moa @ 100yds. I did some fore end "fussing" about 3 weeks ago, and took it out to test. Result is 5 rounds in one, ragged hole at 100yds. Good enough!

The .270 likes 'em hot: 53gr. IMR4350 with a 150gr. Partition, 1/2moa. My Roberts was the same, but over time and sitting in the rack for several years it "lost its JuJu." I'm fussing with it now, and it's at 1 moa, but I know it's good for better. The 3 big ones all have Timneys in them, and the Hornet trigger has been reworked to 2-1/4 oz.

Obviously, I say GET THE RUGER! And let your wife shoot it and get the "Bug".
