i want to either build my own or go buy a quality rifle but i don't know much about AR-based rifles. i need a friend who is knowledgeable in this area who can teach me about the platform and maybe accompany me to the gun show or gun store to pick out the stuff i need or the rifle i should get. maybe i'll buy you lunch? couple rounds of beers? i'm in austin, texas.

all these differenct brands like colt, armalite, bushmaster, rockriver, dpms, etc... and so many options like barrel lining and twist, and a2/3/4 style receivers... too overwhelming!

any help would be appreciated. also, if you know about a good deal going on somewhere? thanks.

Biggiesmalls,

You have some of the lingo down, so it appears you've done some research. That's good. I'd recommend more - specifically spending lots of time reading the FAQ's and the AR-15 forums at AR15.com. Take everyone's opinion with a grain of salt (even this one) and try to achieve a balance that is comfortable for you.

My most important comment is - What you need to buy will be based on what you want to accomplish. You must define your needs in order for someone to be able to provide you with knowledgable assistance.

For example (and this is not a comprehensive list of considerations), do you want:
- the absolute cheapest AR possible
- the least expensive "quality" AR
- the most accurate AR (out to what distance?)
- to hang doo-dads off of it
- one-stop shopping warranty support (single shop/manufacturer)
- iron, glass or magnifying sights
- a "service rifle" for competition

Once you've got a good handle on those kinds of questions you'll be ready to take the next step.

It's all about choices and compromise - quality / time / cost. Pick any two.

I can't really help you with what you need but I'm in Austin too and looking to meet like minded people here. Maybe we can get a few people who'd like to meet up?

I'm in College Station...And as an Aggie, well I'm sorry. You know the rules. :)

I kid, I kid. If you ever are up around College Station, send me a message. We can go out to Arrowhead shooting range and test out that AR.

haha, thanks deer hunter. i was actually gonna be in aggieland this wkend for chilifest but something came up in longhorn land that requires me to stay.

and thanks 10 ring, i'm signing up for an ar15 account i guess:)

anyone else here in ausitn who can help?

The Austin Rifle Club has high power matches every other week and most of them are ARs and the gate is unlocked during those events. Could be a good place to start.

there are a few hands there in Austin that I have had the pleasure of meeting at the ARC that should be able to help if they see this thread.

I have the pleasure of being up there about every other weekend or so depending on work conditions here in Houston. The fiancee's folks has a lake house up on Lake Austin. :D

one thing I might suggest is going to "steve's pages"...the specific link is here and scroll down to the Army TM's for the specific TM 9-1005-249-10. This is the army TM for the AR-15 and might give you some good peeks into the workings of it. Mind you like most Army TM's you have to skip about the first 25 or so pages due to all the addendum's added to the manual. :)

there are a few more there too that are quite neat...

I'm a member of ARC, I'd be happy to meet you and take you out to a match and introduce you. I've also got a few AR books and a how to build DVD that you can borrow.

I've built a few AR's, have most of the tools and stayed at a Holiday Inn Express. Feel free to ping me. I'm in Austin, also a member of ARC.

The Gun Store in Cedar Park is the most black gun friendly in North Austin. GDS Enterprises down south has a HUGE selection of stuff to build your own, you provider your own lower. They are at the SAXET show every month with a big display.

Not familiar with AR's but I live in Round Rock just North of Austin and always enjoy a beer and gun talk.

I go to the SAXET show ever time it's in town.
