Ok, now that I have a decent stable of handguns, which would you choose for home defense purposes?

G19
G23
Sig P226 9mm
Sig P220
Ruger GP100 .357 Mag

I also have a couple of subcompacts to choose from. But, I'm thinking the compact or full size is more appropriate since concealed carry is not an issue.

BTW, I shoot all of them pretty well. .40 S&W recoil is not an issue. I may have a G21SF coming sometime soon too.

I'm thinking either a .40 S&W or .45ACP caliber is best. Not sure I want the flame thrower GP100 indoors.

Thoughts? Suggestions?

Which ones have night sights? Or, if none of them do, which are you willing to get night sights for? The difference between having them and not having them is certainly more important for an HD gun than the difference between any of the calibers you've listed.

Shawnee,

I need to do more one hand drills to figure that out. Likely either the Sig P220 or G19. The recoil of .40 S&W one handed is rougher than 9mm or .45ACP for me.

Which do you shoot best? That's the one I'd go with. Also, I assume all are reliable.

Though my 12 Gauge is my preferred HD gun, I keep a S&W 686P loaded with 38+P 158 grain lead semiwadcutter hollowpoints at my bedside for quicker access. My shotgun is within reach too, but it's size/bulk means it just isn't as quick for me to get into action.

I choose my 686 because I shoot it better than any of my other handguns, including my 1911 (it points naturally and has little recoil), good quality 38+P will do the job as well as any other handgun round can be expected to (most are comparatively weak), it doesn't have a manual safety, and with it's long DA trigger pull, I'm not as concerned about a negligent discharge if I'm suddenly awoken at o'dark thirty, grasping for my handgun. Plus I've never had a single glitch with it, so I trust my life to it.

YMMV

Those are all excellent HD handguns. Go with whatever you are most "instinctive". Which one would you handle the best in the dark? This is probably the one you shoot the most at the range.

Right now, it is the G19. I've had it the longest. It was my first handgun. But, the others aren't far behind. Which is a good thing. :D

I'd take the Sig P220, and the Ruger GP-100 (loaded with .38 special +P 158 gr. lead hollow point). Use the one you shoot the best for primary, and the other for backup. Two weapons, not especially for total round capacity, but in case one becomes inoperable. I like .45 caliber. I like revolvers. Another reason is that I "think" the .45, and the +P .38 special have less muzzle blast (noise) when fired indoors, than the 9mm and .40 S & W.

i say go with a hicap, semi auto. skip the revolver. from the ones you posted above if i had to choose one then i would get the glock 19.

caliber preference is up to you and you could get the glock model size that you like in whatever caliber you want. i like to shoot alot so 9m/ or .40 is the best for me.

then whatever you do decide, i would put a weapon mounted light on there. and a set of night sights and then you will be set.

Glock 19's are great. I also like the Sig P220. The Glock I would say I can shoot better but the Sig is a more bigger round and can be used great as a hitter if you run out of ammo.

I'd pick the one that I can shoot most accurately one handed. 5 Shots in 5 Seconds at 5 Yards keeping them in 5 Inches. BTW, which one can you do this with either hand with?

As far as the light, put it on your gun if you like getting shot at. :) IMHO there is too much emphasis placed on lights on a gun. I like my light in my hand, the gun in the other hand. If you do use the light on the gun, remember that every target you "identify" by pointing the light at them, you also have a gun pointed at that same target. That's not a good situation to be in if you end up pointing your gun at your spouse, child or an LEO that is responding to your 911 Call.

I'm partial to Revolvers because I like the roundgun and I shoot well with them. I also like the .357 Magnum cartridge, fireball and all. :D Actually, I use a "low flash" round at night with no problems. Lots of people make an issue out of the capacity of the Revolver compared to the Autoloader. For me it's a non-issue. The Revolver is only used to fight my way to my Shotgun and Rifle, both of which I have for Home Defense.

Depending on what night of the week it is, I may have a .357 Magnum or a Glock 19 or even a .45 ACP Revolver by my bed. For me the Handgun is a "secondary" weapon in Home Defense.

Just some "food for thought".

Glock 19, but if you are some one who like to have a live round in chamber then SigP226. I have both and that is how I use them depending on the situation.

I rotate my stable through HD duty. Right now a S&W 99 .45 is loaded with Hornady TAP and near my right hand. Next in the rotation will probably be the EAA Witness full size in .40...

All in one

...

If you go P226 40cal, then you could have the option of both, 9mm and 357 with just a barrel change, and 9mm mags.

Same holds true with a smaller P229 40cal, Carry, then you can have either 357 or 9mm with that gun as well..

Wow, you're sitting on some terrific sidearms. All of them are top-notch. You're very fortunate, Sir!

I can't help you make a decision, as I am both a revolver guy and a pistol guy. I just wanted to chime in with a comment that you must have worked hard to acquire such a fine list of firearms. Congratulations!
