I've been wanting a Ruger 10/22 forever and a day and I kept putting it off until recently. Well I waited too long and things across the nation are so chaotic that I can't find one anywhere and the ones I do find are way overpriced.

Here's my question, should I keep up the search for a Ruger 10/22 and then customize it however I please or should I go ahead and build a .22 upper for my AR-15 which is equally, if not more so, customizable?

If there is any gun in the world that there are more parts for then the 10/22 I would be supprised.

It is a inexpensive platform to start with and you can make it into what ever your heart desires a piece at a time. They are accurate and a lot of fun to shoot. You want it to look like a AR, make it into a AR, you want it to look like a snipper rifle, make it into a snipper rifle, you want it to look like a dragunov then make it into a dragunov, that was my choice.

You can change any part on it yourself without a gunsmith, that is what's so great about them and they can be found anywhere you look.

Good luck and have fun.

You've wanted it "forever", and apparently are still thinking about it. When a desire refuses to die, there is a reason. Go get your 10/22.

Keep looking for the 10/22. I have one; waaaay up on my "Fun Gun" list.

Another added benny of the 10/22: It is the "Chevy Small Block Engine" of the rimfire world. You can run it from Factory Box Stock to Unlimited, or anywhere in between.

My box stock 10/22 shoots any Long Rifle round from the ultra-cheapy Rem Thunderbolts to CCI mini-mags.

Depending on how much you want to customize it you might try looking at used guns. There is nothing "wrong" with the basic gun as it comes from the factory but if you were already going to replace the majority of the parts that is where I would start.

My first rifle, way back when, was a Ruger 10/22. I paid something like $72 OTD for it nearly 35 years ago. Surprisingly accurate (especially with Wolf Match Target ammo), right out of the box, I'm still getting tons of enjoyment out of it to this day. It's also probably one of the most interesting platforms, next to the AR-15, out there for customizing in whatever way you want it.

Wait for things to get sorted out in terms of prices and availability and then get yourself a Ruger 10/22.

Here in California 10/22s are readily available and only about $20 or so more money than they cost before the Democrats started this current gun control craziness. Go for it. There is so much you can do with a 10/22!

How will you be using the rifle? Casual plinking? More serious target shooting? Small game? All of the above?

The nice thing about the 10/22 is the ability to turn it into whatever you want. I built mine up many years ago to a tack driver but I replaced most of the parts except for the receiver and bolt.

OK, i want to turn ,my 10/22 into a SLIM TRIM 22 so the action will carry nice in my hands... How do you do that?? It sits in my hand about like a beached whale!

To the OP,

I'm going to pick the BEST choise, even though it's the "third" choise! An S&W MP22, much better than an upper, and will give you some good usefull practise to owning your AR.

The only "benefits" of a dedicated .22lr upper [for your AR lower] would be not having to fill out another form 4473, . . . and it will probably break down easier for better cleaning.

Just bought (yesterday) a NIB 1022. plain Jane wood and blue. Bought it at Walmart for $229 plus tax. Hang in there. They are out there. Now..... let the customization begin!

Demetrios;

Big R, Great Falls Mt. 10/22's in stock. Basic carbine $229.00 & Take-down at $330.00. I just got a take-down & love it. Buy on your credit card & have it shipped to your LGS. There! Now go getcher 10/22.

I own both, but have about five variations of the 10/22 in my safe. If you can only have one STYLE go with the 10/22. Within that group there are so many to choose from and so much you can do to customize it yourself.

One variation that is overlooked by many is the Compact - about 1" shorter in the stock and 2" shorter in the barrel. Fiber optic sights, but pretty plain after that with blue and hardwood stock. Bought one for the grandsons to shoot and all of us adults are having a ball with it. Light, fast and handy. Give it a chance if you're looking for a quick handling little carbine.

You want a Ruger 10/22. Buy one. For me it depends on your shooting, but since you are thinking AR also, I'd say go with the 10/22.

Both great options. I have had a Ruger 10/22 forever, but now have a .22 AR as well and don't plan to get rid of either. Tough choice. Which appeals to you more. On another note, while I hope neither is banned, the Ruger is far less likely to be a target in an anti gun bill.
