My local shop has three NEF 10ga. single-barrel shotguns in store. The barrels are massive, and the breech looks like it's for an artillery shell.

They come from the factory with 24" barrels, I believe. As I was looking at them, I couldn't help but imagine how cool one of those would look if a 'smith chopped the barrel to 18.5". My gunsmith has done such work on many occasions with the 12ga. NEF, so he just shrugged and said, "Sure...it'll cost you $20 on top of the price for the gun."

A short, single-tube 10ga. may not have any practical use at all, so why do I find myself pondering that idea suddenly?

Does anyone still make 10ga. slugs? :D

Only one question-
Where do I send the resume to be the first one to shoot that beast? :D

That project would run under $200 out the door, including gunsmithing work. Hmmmm....

I have it on good authority that the NEF 10ga will rattle your fillings, even with the lead weights in the stock. That's just the kind of demented blunderbuss that's missing in my collection.

I did something similar to a 12ga. Topper 88. Cut the barrel down to 20 inches, cut 2 inches off the buttstock,
put a shell cuff and sling on it. I highly recommend weighting the butt and putting on some padding.

BOOM, y'all!!!!:what:

I saw one of those the other day.Made my shoulder hurt just looking at it,and you want to make it lighter!!!!:what: Give us a report. On the gun and hospital bill.:D

When I was a kid, I read in a second hand Soldier of Fortune (mom did not like that magazine at all, for some unknown reason) about a guy that did just this thing as "fighting" firearm. I think they called their gun the "roadblocker."

Lendringser,

Do it! Cut that barrel down to 18"-20". Of course, you'll lose the choke, but with buckshot/slugs at close range, it shouldn't make much difference in the potential carnage ;)

I've always wanted one big bore shotgun/rifle so I just picked up a Spanish 10ga SxS. Next step will be to have the barrels cut to 19" and the stock & recoil pad fitted to my specs. Fortunately, the gun weights in at 12+ lbs, three more than the NEF.

10ga slugs from Federal & 00 Buck from Winchester are on the way.:uhoh:

Not the name I gave it--I can't post that one.
Seems the farmer that did this got the idea from the old 'boiler guns", thought it would be neat. He didn't keep it long, seems he found another victim...errr interested buyer that thought it would be neat.

It did do a number on an old truck door...Yikes!
Yes I cheated, I use a past shoulder pad--they need to make one for one's face...

I saw one of these some years back on consignment at a now defunct gun shop nearby. It had the Full Monty, camo paint, sling with shell loops for about 10 shells, and a shortened but legal barrel.

I asked about it, and the counter man said it had been fired, ONCE.

Best guess, it weighed about 4 lbs less than needed for comfort.

As for defense, shoot it at a perp and whoever gets out of the hospital first is the winner.

OTOH, one of these set up with some extra weight and tuned handloads of Hevishot or other non tox shot would make a good pass shooting shotgun for folks on a budget.

I would definitely port it. 1) to make the recoil more manageable (like its ever gonna be nice :p ) and 2) to make the cool factor even more amplified by its incredible boom!!!

John, I know you're kidding, but think of the Karmic Burden if someone took you seriously!

A recent American Shooter show showed a 4 guage black powder rifle.

Breach loaded single shot. Used by African explorers in the 1870's. As in "Dr. Livington, I presume?".

Fired something like a 2200 grain slug.

Our friend the American Shooter host, was shown firing one.

My Son Corey used to love recoil --

He also enjoyed terrorizing othert shooters by letting them fire a "kid's: gun -- he was 16-18 at the time--

He had a NEF 10 Ga which he cut to eighteen inches and took the weights out of --
It was unbelievable-- :uhoh:

What you really need to do is get it sawed off to 8 inches or so, pay tyhe $5 tax, cut the stock down to a pistol grip, and practice cocking/reloading it Terminator style (just having to do a quick spin mtion with your wrist and it automatically loads itself and extracts, just like Arnold!

when i first started shooting Cowboy Action matches i looked into getting a 10ga SxS and having it cut to "coach gun" (18-20") length. adn stoking it with Blackpowder (which surprisingly gives less "felt" recoil (it pushes instead of kicking sharply).

was gonna call it "the PIECEmaker" :D (there is a long story behind this, involving the character from a Sci-fi/fantasy series that my screeen name is based on. let's just say a 10ga sawed off would have been the real world equivilent of that character's favored arm)

unfortunately my economic staus took a down-turn before i was able to find an acceptable "canidate for conversion" and the project fell to the wayside. but i STILL want to do it one day. of course mild loadings, a Deadmule recoil reducer, adn a VERY good recoil pad, along with as much weight as i could add without screwing up balance would be necessities.
