NEF 10ga. and a sick and twisted thought

A friend of mine and member of THR has a NEF 10 gauge that I've put about 12, 2 1/4 ounce shells through, most in one day was 5. I really dont think its all that bad. I sure expected it to be worse, The tingling and numbnes goes away after a couple of minutes. I'm only 5' 7" and weigh 145 pounds too. I think you old guys (im 16) tend to exaggerate a little bit or maybe you just cant take it anymore....:D :neener:

I dunno - now theoretically you might actually reduce recoil slightly simply because all the powder wouldn't have a chance to burn. OTOH I know of a LEO dept in the southwest that bought one of those 10 gauge "Roadblocker" shotguns when they first came out: it did a great job of removing car radiators, doors, and such when somebody tried to run a road block, but they ended up having to draw straws since nobody in the dept was overly fond of firing the stupid thing.

maybe you might want to pattern it with 'turkey loads'? and see how it does?

I have an NEF "Pardner" 12-ga with the barrel shortened to 20". I made the mistake of firing 3" magnum slugs through it before installing the rubber slip-on recoil pad.

The sixth shot made my whole left arm tingle. I had a nasty, deep bruise and a screw-shaped welt in my shoulder for two weeks. I coudln't shoot off of that shoulder for the rest of the week.

Now, with the recoil pad, I love that gun. :D

Varmint, the NEF so grossly violates the Rule of 96 that good fit and form are not enough to guarantee comfort.

Jeff D, in all likelyhood a few years from now you'll look back on your statement, wince and try to forget you ever wrote it.

Recoil Comparisons

For those who might be curious,

12ga 2.75", 1 oz load @ 1125 fps from a 7.5 lb gun = 15.8 ft lbs of
recoil energy.

12ga 3.", 1.5/8 oz load @ 1280 fps from a 7.5 lb gun = 52. ft lbs.

10ga 3.5", 2.25 oz load @ 1210 fps from a 10 lb gun = 62.9 ft lbs.

By way of comparison to rifles:

.30.06 Spfd. with a 165gr bullet @ 2900 fps from an 8 lb gun = 20.1 ft lb of
recoil energy.

.458 Win. Mag with a 500gr bullet @ 2100 fps from a 10 lb gun = 57.2 ft lbs.

.600 NE with a 900 gr @ 1950 fps from a 12 lb gun = 154 ft lbs.

Three words for you...

Modern. Howdah. Pistol.

Put me on the (exceedingly short, I'm sure) "Wanna play with it" list!! Y'know...I'm still wondering if Hand_Rifle_Guy ever got around to cutting down that Kodiak .72 BP rifle into a howdah...?

Kal

I cut my NEF 12 down to 18.5, recoil is a bit rough...
But a 10? Wow, thats asking for trouble;)

Isn't the NEF 10ga bbl rifled? WHat kind of range does that sucker have?

Why oh why does this idea seem to present a certain twisted appeal to my horribly bent mind?

Probably because the words 'shoulder fired claymore' would sound so cool when uttered at the range...right until said shoulder fired claymore is actually employed, I'm sure.

Not REALLY, I got questioned about the "Severe Muzzle Blast" of a .338 Winchester Magnum, while I was fireing it on the National Forestry Range there.

The one 10 Miles from Manitou Springs.

AF Academy, Star Fleet Academy, Same thing!
