In the wake of the IHOP shootings in Carson City, the State Legislature is being urged to re-evaluate NV's gun laws.

One talking head was even heard to spout the old argument, "What's anybody need an assault rifle for, anyway?".

(The answer, of course, is to protect ourselves from you guys. Plan B: if you do succeed in taking our AK's and AR's away, we'll just have to lay out with our '06's and whack your guys at 600 yards and take theirs.)

Seriously, gun laws could not have prevented this whack-job from stealing his brother's rifle to do the deed unless, like the talking head said, no assault rifles at all. That point conceeded, he would have just gotten his hands on some other firearms, a machete, axe or baseball bat. (Ever try to take a machete away from someone who doesn't want to give it up?) Fairly easily concealable and deadly silent, he could have taken out half a dozen before anyone realized what was going on.

We don't need more useless gun laws, we need places like IHOP to get rid of their "No Guns" signs. Even ONE concealed weapon carrier on that morning...

There was a CCW holder there who wisely realized that taking on an active shooter, firing an AK-47, while armed with a pistol was not a good idea.

BTW: My local IHOP happily welcomes open carriers.

I consider myself a respectable, responsible, productive person - in short, the sort of fellow states need more of, not less of.
New York is guaranteed to lose me one day due to its onerous taxation and burdensome gun laws - it's just a matter of when.
If Nevada moves ahead with new restrictions on ownership or carry, then regrettably that state will be stricken from my list of possibilities, as I'm sure it will be from a surprising number of people thinking of going there to live.

NV has been infested with Californians for over 2 decades moving to escape what CA has become - only to try and turn it back into what they left - one of the reasons I moved from NV

Most of their gun laws are very friendly - you used to be able to go to the local drug store chain that also sold guns - get a 44 or similar, ammo, go to the liquor section and grab a bottle of your choice, then head over to the drug counter for your mood meds - all in one trip - check out and be on your way

And the store was open 24/7 at the time

Can't get much more gun friendly than that

Considering that the shooter violated many gun laws before the massacre began, it's obvious that putting up a few more isn't going to dissuade anybody.

Relaxation? Relaxation? Relaxation?

Well, why don't you have one? They work as walking canes, hammers, paperweights, capital, investments, symbols, toys, weapons, money sinks, and commodities.

It is so much nicer to at least know who killed you. You're also more likely to survive an AK shot than a Springfield 03 shot.

I agree with the machete attack scenario. Knife attacks normally aren't at all dramatic, so it's normally a while before anyone realizes what is happening.

Wasn't there a guy with a CC there? I think he chose to not engage the armored nutjob with the longarm because he didn't want to become another casualty. But what if an open carrier was there? Could the obvious presence of arms at least thrown the killer off balance?

Anti-gunners in this country foam at the mouth for incidents like this so that they can have an opportunity to rob millions of people of their freedom because of the actions of a few. Sad thing is most people are so ignorant they could care less that they are giving up more and more liberty as long as they have a false sense of safety as they drive to and from blabbing on their cell phones slopping down Big Macs and 60 Oz drinks. Car accidents, heart disease and diabetes who cares..but legal gun owners?? OMG!!!!

There has been people talking about Nevada's gun laws but I don't think it will go anywhere. Its a knee jerk and emotional response to the shooting and I can understand that. The State Legislature knows that anti gun legislation is toxic in this state. We still need to keep an eye and ear open though.

Oneounceload's post above is spot on.

My understanding is no one other then the shooter was armed in the I Hop. The CCW holder was in his restaurant 50 yards across the parking lot on the phone with the mop up squad.
