I'm preparing to take a trip to Primm, NV (Clark county) to help out with recovery on the SNORE races and would like to carry my handgun with me. The laws that I've been able to find seem pretty vague, and I want to play it safe.
From what I read, as long as you're open-carrying, you're fine? From what I've heard you also cannot keep it in a backpack, gun case, etc. while traveling?
Any and all info on the subject, especially from Clark county residents would be greatly appreciated!
Also, yes I checked handgunlaw.us, didn't have the specific answer I was looking for.
 
I live in MD but have a NV CCW. You can OC except courthouses, schools, etc. I would not even try to OC in a casino. You'll be asked to leave immediately Posted signs don't carry the weight of law but if asked to leave you must or you'll be trespassed. As to car carry, NV law does not address it. I would not conceal in a car because if you get out, you're now breaking the law.

I also would not OC on the strip, You will get a visit from Metro. They have had some issues with their folks not being up on the law, but after a rather large incident and a formal complaint was filed, they cleaned up their act.

NV law makes no reference to car carry. I would OC in a car to be safe. Also be aware North Las Vegas and Henderson tried to enforce their own laws until they got slapped with a law suit. Nevada has state preemption so local laws do not apply. Call Las Vegas Metro and see what they say.

Open carry is legal in NV.
However, the LVMPD does recommed that you do not open carry where all the tourists are at (on the Strip, in casinos, at malls). This is due to tourists from places where civilians can not legal own/possess firearms calling 911with "man with gun" calls and them having to respond as such.

As long as it is not concealed upon your person, it's legal to have a loaded handgun stored in your vehicle.
In the glove/utlity compartment of the vehicle is okay.
In a movable container (backpack, suitcase, etc.) is not okay.
Unloaded and in a locked container is also okay.

Also...
Primm, NV is really close to the CA border. So make sure you don't wander over to CA, because loaded open carry and having a loaded handgun in your vehicle is not legal in CA.

If you goto NV often, then get a NV non-resident CCW permit.
Or wait until summer of this year to see if the NVSCA will add the AZ CCW permit to the list of states NV honors. Rumor is they are considering it and will be making a final vote in May.

There is also a bill in the GA to remove the requirement that mandates that you live fire qualify with each make, model and caliber of handgun you want to carry, which is a great idea. Hope it passes.

The bill is SB126 and it has a very good chance of passing.

When revolvers were changed into a category, semi-auto pistols were also suppose to be changed into a category. Due to certain anti-gun politicians (that are no longer in office) only revolvers were changed into a category. Now that those politicians are no longer in office, SB126 has a very good chance of passing since it has the approval of the NVSCA.

As long as the NVSCA is the big dog, NV CCW reciprocity law will not change.
 
Let me get this straight - I have a California CCW. So when I drive to visit my family in UT, when I get to the NV border I can just remove my holster from my belt and put the loaded pistol in the glove compartment and I am legal? I know that UT honors my CA permit, so no problems there.
 
Yes. You can carry it in your glove box.

Another question. With a CCW, what is the rule on carrying in a casino in Las Vegas? I know it is a private place and not a public building. Do the casino's have no gun signs?

Yes.

It's also legal to just open carry, while you are in NV.

Some casinos have posted signs.

But, posted signs have no legal weight except when posted at government buildings, schools and day care centers. [NRS 202.3673]

Regardless if the casino has a posted sign or if it's there policy, it is legal to carry concealed in a casino with a valid CCW permit.

If they discover you are carrying, they can...
1. Ask you to leave property
2. Ask you to secure the firearm in your room
3. Ask you to secure the firearm in your vehicle
4. Ask you to secure the firearm with hotel/casino security

If you refuse to leave property after a representative of the casino/business asks you to, you can be arrested & cited for tresspassing [NRS 207.200] and/or breach of peace [NRS 203.010].

I really hope this happens as I have an AZ CWP and go the Vegas 2-4 times a year but havent bothered to get a non-resident NV CWP.

How did you manage to get that? That would certainly tempt me to move back home again.
 
Hmmmm. Its not that I didnt believe him. I thought Visilia was in one of the beach counties and I know its difficult at best in most of CA.

Is it a CA permit and in affect in all counties?

Right now those no gun signs at some casinos and other places like costco and so on carry no weight with the law. If you carry past one of those signs and are caught all they can do is ask you to leave. If you don't leave they can trespass you and have you arrested for trespass. More likely what will happen in LV is if you are made carrying concealed you will end up having a bunch of metro officers pointing their guns at you, and that has the possibility of not ending well.

If your going to carry make sure its concealed and keep it that way.
 
danez71 - Visalia is in Tulare county, which is dark green on that map. It is no problem to get a permit, and it is good anywhere in the state (with the obvious exceptions of courts, controlled access areas of airports, federal buildings, and buildings where city or county employees regularly work, etc). But when I visit my daughter in the Bay Area, I know I am one of the few in town carrying legally.

The sheriff in Fresno County was quoted in the Fresno Bee a couple years ago saying that she wanted to issue permits and carried extra applications in her car for anyone who wanted to apply. California is really two very very different states - the far left leaning coast and the very conservative remainder of the state. Remember that the San Joaquin and Sacramento valleys are primarily agriculture-driven, which is usually associated with more conservative attitudes. And the desert counties think more like AZ and NV than the rest of the state.
