Never been hunting, are my guns suitable?

Here's the most important part of his first post;"I am a very excellent shot with my mosin, and I am quite confident I could hit a deers vitals at 100 yards with its iron sights", and "I would prefer to hunt with my mosin if I can though."

That's it. We're done talking. He has a rifle that he shoots well, that is easily powerful enough to drop deer, that he is comfortable using, with better range than his 30-30, and that he would prefer to use.

The ONLY reason for him to use the 30-30 would be if his mosin wasn't an effective deer round. We all know that isn't the case. It's what HE likes and prefers. It does the job. He's familiar with it.

I say, by all means use the Mosin. It should do a fine job. The only reason I can think of for using the 30-30 would be if you NEEDED a scope for some reason. But if iron sights are going to do the job then crank out that 54R and get busy.

With the number of scout scope options, it as easy (maybe easier if it is an old Win 94) to scope a Mosin than a Win Mod 94.

Epijunkie pretty much summed it up. The only real advantage I would see in my 94 is it is lighter. But I am an experienced hiker/backpacker so I would glady carry the extra weight to use a rifle I'm more confident and experienced with. And I would put a scope on my Mosin before I would put one on my 94.

30-30 ammo is also much more costly than 7.62x54r, and I already have a good stockpile of 54r to practice with.

I understand the soft points will shoot different, but I find it hard to believe that it would make a big enough difference to make me prefer my 30-30. I will practice with some before I go though.
