My first rifle was the Mosin Nagant M91/30. Great gun, love it. Anyway I have yet to go deer hunting and I'd like to take my first deer with. It's illegal to hunt with FMJ does anyone have any experience with any SP/HP/SST etc. hunting rounds? Good ones to look for bad ones to stay away from? Any info will help. Thanks in advance :)

I used the steel case brown bear (i think it was 205 grain) and it worked. Was overkill for a coyote, but it worked. Would be a good deer round. Using a soft point is important.

Double Tap has 203 grain 7.62x54R Moose loads. That should work for Deer :)

+1 for Privi - I use the 150 gr sp and they work great on whitetail. Recoil is minimal and the brass is good to reload. Also price is extremely reasonable.

Go with the Privi. It is very good quality ammo. I've used the steel case Brown bear 205 Gr SP but could not keep them on a standard issue paper plate at 100 yds. Have not had that problem with any other ammo.

I shot some privi out of my 30.06 grouped bout 1.5 inches out of a rifle that usually does better the MOA. Stil thats plenty good I wouldnt be afraid to use it at all.

My Mosin 91/30 loves the Prvi 150 gr. soft points. Chronographed them at an average 2797 fps, (call it 2800) and they are real accurate at least in my gun. That should be more than adequate for any whitetail deer. Haven't hunted with mine yet but right now that would be my ammo choice for deer. Plus, the Prvi stuff is reloadable, very high quality brass. Bought a couple boxes initially just so I'd have some good brass for when I added 7.62x54R to my reloading resume. Wanted to work up a good handload for hunting but this stuff shoots so good I'd go hunting with it tomorrow if I could. Bought a few more boxes so I'd have more brass so at least I won't have to rush myself to find a good hunting load.

If you can find the Prvi Partizan 180 gr SP, get them . The Sellier and Bellot 180 gr SP is what i used on hogs years ago and is hot loaded.

I have used Privi 150 gr. SP to take 3 whitetails from my M44 , one whitetail with S & B 180 gr SP from my 91/30 and one whitetail with Barnaul 203 gr SP from my 91/30 pictured below. ( 150 yards, issued iron sights ) .

All 3 loads worked great . However I will not buy S & B again as about half of the bullets were loose in the case and the ones that I did fire all split the case necks.

Thanks everyone for replying. :) I've picked up some Prvi 150gr and S&B 180gr
SP, both shoot very well and are very accurate. Thanks again everyone :)

There's lots of good hunting ammo available. You will have to try a box of as many brands as you can to find the ammo your rifle shoots best though. 3" at 100 is plenty accurate for deer.

Ask the three deer I shot with my 91/30 last season how well Brown Bear 203 grain SP ammo works. Since I have already eaten the animals I will tell you. Brown Bear does about the same amount of damage to a deer as a shotgun slug.

I shot a .5" mild steel spinner with a 203 gr Brown Bear cartridge. I expected the bullet to ricochet off the spinner into the ground. It didn't ricochet. The bullet punched a hole in my spinner.
