I've decided my next gun purchase will (probably) be a stainless, wood stocked Ruger 10/22 carbine (I say probably because until I actually plunk down the scratch, there's a chance of changing my mind).

Since we have no gun shop in town, the easiest place to get it would be Wallace World. I've heard, though, that the Wal Mart 10/22's might be a bit "cheaper" in their contruction than the ones real gun shops sell. Is this true, and might it be worth it to travel 50+ miles to a gun shop to get a "real" 10/22?

Thanks.

I've ordered many a gun from Wal-Mart and I KNOW that they get guns directly from Lipsey's so I wouldn't be al that concerned.

No, if it is the same sku# it is the exact same rifle. The problem comes when they have "special" models, like their savages that don't have the accutrigger. I've only seen those models at wally world and Bass pro. Those models have different #'s than the standard savages though.

I would buy at local gun shop, even if it cost a little more. Walmart here does not even sell guns anymore, and ammo is very limited. Never know when your wallywold will quit selling guns.

Just my .02, but I am anti walmart

Completely false internet rumor. If W-M the most convenient place to buy, just get it and don't worry.

Don't shop at wal-mart, ever. Not unless you want to support an evil company that uses their employees. Why get something cheaper when you can buy it for 20 bucks more at some other guys shop who doesn't care about you the same.

Bestseller;

The gun's gonna be the same, but I'm with AirplaneDoc for philosophical reasons. I hate paying money to Red China's marketing division.

Well if you are against wal-mart, don't get it there. But since you asked, I say get it. It's the same gun there as it is everywhere.

Wal-Mart is probably the reason there isn'ta gunstore in your town.

Probably not. Wal-mart has about the worst selection of guns, ammo, and all things shooting. There prices are usually better on the things they have, but they don't have enough to satisfy everyone.

Not only that, theres a lot of Wal-Marts that don't even sell guns anymore, aside from your cheap 50 cal muzzleloaders. Even then some don't sell that.

Fact is they all come off the same assembly line, regardless of where they are sold.

You will get better advice and service from a gun store than you will walmart. You got a problem, question or need a gunsmith try and find anyone competent at walmart.

You might want to cruise the pawnshops or classified ads in the local paper.

Friday I picked up a new, unfired, spotless, blued 10/22 at a local pawnshop for $100 :). The owner wasn't at the shop and his daughter (who is in the process of taking over) couldn't reach him on the phone. She knows me and saw my interest in it, said "If you two want to make a deal go ahead".

It worked out pretty well for both of us, he got more money than the pawnshop would have given him and I got it for less than I would have paid a pawnshop.

I have bought $$$ of guns from gun stores. I also have a 10/22 that was one of my first guns. Got it at Wal-Mart back when spending a bit of money on a gun was a bigger deal. Fine gun. Still have it.

It's the only one I ever got at Wal-Mart. My local gun shop should have bought it for me because it started the bug that made them lots of $$$ on AR-15, Cooper, Mil-surp, etc.

my walmart doesn't even sell guns. O.0 My grandparents ones do. i do like to buy package ammo sometimes from w-m. i will say that sometimes walmart can be good, like the "oh no! i saw big thingie outside and am outa ammo. AHHH to wally world! :D

When my local wally world still carried guns I priced a 10/22 there as well as a local gun store. The price was all of $5 cheaper at wally world. So I'd check around before I purchased at wally world over a local store.

heads-up

Just a heads-up on the 10/22.
If WM is doing a booming business on 10/22's, then you need to know:

1) Ruger is now manufacturing 10/22's with PLASTIC trigger groups. That's why if WM is selling a bunch then they'll more than likely have the newer ones with plastic trigger groups. If you order one - it's yours. If you can "look" at one, in a gunstore, you'll probably be able to tell if the trigger group is plastic or aluminum.

2) The stainless version has the reciever as silver painted aluminum not stainless steel, the trigger group is also painted aluminum or plastic. The only thing stainless is the barrel and you'll probably be changing that out anyway.

3) Everybody should have at least one 10/22. I have a 10/22 that's been heavily customized and it's a great gun.

Check out the 10/22 forums here -

Good luck,

No, I won't change the barrel out.

And our gunshop went out of business because the proprietor chose to get into the oil bid'ness while the gettin' was good.

Yes indeed! What goes around will surely come around.

Completely false internet rumor. If W-M the most convenient place to buy, just get it and don't worry.

The rumor was started well before algore's internet.

Wal-Mart is probably the reason there isn'ta gunstore in your town.

Having visited local gun shop in my area for over 29 years now, I can get pretty good information on who and why certain shops close down. Of the ones that have in my area, none ever closed due to a Wal*Mart near by. The usual reasons were high prices (resulting in low purchases) and documentation (ATF audits). I don't ever recall ever seeing EBRs or handguns being purchased at any Wal*Marts in my area. (So where else can you get those?)

Wal Mart has the best prices around. Go for it! I try to buy local from the gun shops in town, but then I am doing pretty well, not rich but not living paycheck to paycheck. Wal Marts guns are for the most part the same guns you will find every ware else. I did see that they were selling 10-22's that had a longer barrel then the carbine, never found out if it was an exclusive item just for them or not. Never saw them in the other gun shops and I never checked the Ruger catalog.

buy from Wal-mart. the ammo and guns are cheaper. However, if you're like me, be sure to lash yourself a good ten times or so to repent after getting home and realizing that you shopped there.
