So I was in Wal-Mart tonight and noticed they had some Federal Power Shok in .270 in stock. I don't have a .270 so it was of no use to me but this is the only Wal-Mart I've seen that stocks this rifle ammo and I hadn't seen much of it in stock in a while.

This is what it used to look like AmmoMarch222009009.jpg

The one on the left is how I originally saw it then Wal-Mart was out of stock for quite a while. Next time they got some in it looked like on the right. I asked online and was told it was just a new box. Well, tonight I noticed it looks similar as the newer box style however, the box is now red instead of blue. Is this the same exact ammo or can I not expect it to be the same? Does Wal-Mart get one off runs of this or will others shops have it in red when they get new stock in too?

The newer style box above in blue I've only seen at Wal-Mart btw but was told online it was a newer style box. All the gun shops have ones like on the left however it may be old and left over. So what's the deal are these special ones for Wal-Mart or is it how all the Federal ammo like this is now?

federal packages their premium line in red boxes. premium being a 'name brand' bullet like sierra gameking or barnes tsx.

the blue box stuff, federal's standard line, has had several box design changes over the past 10 or so years. still the same as it ever was.

So now that Wal-Mart has the Power Shock stuff in a red box that looks similar to the Champion Pistol ammo and Lighning .22 rounds? Looks identical to those boxes only says Power Shock instead.

I've been buying 7mm and 300 mag Power-Shok in the new box at WallyWorld for about a year. I bought some old box Power-SHok from a local 'smith and I couldn't tell any difference in between the two, wrt trajectory, accuracy, etc. It's good stuff imho, no matter how they package it. :)

I think its just a new box the walmart where I live has the new red boxes in .30-30 and still have the old blue boxes like you have pictured too. I guess the red box is just to mix it up.

If I were bear or elk hunting, I'd choose premium ammo. For whitetails or other deer, or for SHTF stocking, the Power Shok is fine, IMO.

i dont think my walmarts near me even sell this. otherwise i would buy it federal is my favorite ammo co. i have always had to get rem core lokt, or winchester power points when i get centerfire ammo.

I've purchased a lot of the blue box Power Shok ammo. Good stuff. Then I reload the brass for even better performance!

I love it, and have shot a few boxes of .300WM through the DTA-SRS just for plinking with. It is not terribly accurate (fine for plinking, and hunting), but dirt cheap (about $17/box). I have not (and likely will not) use it for hunting, but I wouldn't be afraid of it if I chose to do so. My only problem is apparently all of the Wally's in my neck of the woods have apparently discontinued carrying it in .300WM...though they still carry 7mmRM. :banghead:

Yeah I also have found I like it. I get better groups with Federal Fusion ammo however, I get decent groups with this ammo also and it's a lot cheaper. It was $14 a box at Wal-Mart in the past. Not sure what it is now as some ammo has gone up in price. $14 was hard to beat when Fusions were $30 a box. I wish Wal-Mart sold Fusion ammo.

Anyway, for the guy that said he wished his Wal-Mart sold this ammo to be honest out of the many Wal-Marts I've looked in I think this is the only one I can remember seeing this ammo in. Maybe one other but I'm not sure it even had it. I've seen one other one that had a box or two of Federal rifle ammo but it wasn't the power shok ammo it was a more expensive one. Is it rare for Wal-Marts to carry this ammo or is it just rare in the ones around here?

Can you guys find this stuff at your Wal-Mart?

In the never-ending quest for ammo (typically bulk rimfire) I float between about 5 stores (sometimes more), about half of those carry the Fed. Power Shok...none have carried it in .300WM for about 4-6wks now. I can still find .30-06, .270, et al very easily, and for some reason they have swapped the .300WM for 7mmRM (neither popular here...but the .300 is much more common in these parts). :)

I have bought Federal ammo in that blue box before at Wal Mart and Cabela's. Works just fine for what I paid for it. It's been a couple of years probably.

power•shok

It sure is easier to practice with. 7mag ammo is pretty expensive. Before I found the power shok I had shot 2 boxes of shells in a year. Since I found the power•shoks for $17 a box, I went thru 2 boxes last week. :D. Lord knows I need the practice !
