Anybody seen or know more about this new 1911 upper being offered by Hogue? (Fixed barrel, non-gas operated, sights never move in relation to barrel) . . .

http://www.getgrip.com/main/whatsnew/avenger.html

"With Patents Pending the Avenger is an entirely new handgun action that is different from anything else ever made before! This new action eliminates the problems associated with using a fixed barrel with high power cartridges. The Avenger is not gas operated and in comparison installs easily on the frame and doesn't suffer from gas operated fouling problems, in fact, the Avenger even works well with lead bullets. The extreme accuracy comes from a match barrel fixed in place with the sighting device, there is simply no movement between the sight and the barrel. The fixed barrel eliminates the need for the costly gunsmithing required to precision fit a conventional slide and barrel. Installation is so simple you can take the Avenger upper off and put the stock slide on in a matter of minutes."

Ugly, but interesting.

The Avenger also has style! The futuristic techno look and racy styling of the Avenger combined with the incredible accuracy and low recoil will make Avenger a must have among shooting enthusiasts.

Enthusiasts who love Hi Points that is.
Yuck.
That thing is truly disgusting. Looks like a Mac 10, a Hi Point, and a 1911 had in illicit 3 way love triangle and this sprang out.
I want DNA testing on this monster.

At $849.95 the Avenger allows a shooter to economically convert any existing 1911 style frame to a match ready race gun.

That made me crack up big time... Funniest thing I've read in a gun ad since... what is the Special Weapons company? Vulcan Forge or something like that... calling themselves "Legendary"! LOL Legendary like Hesse and Lorcin!

Economically?

The first 250 sold will be commemoratively inscribed and numbered from 1 to 250 of 250!

250? I guess they have high hopes for that ugly thing... I don't know if those can qualify as "commemorative". Maybe it's so you can commemorate the time you turned your 1911 into a ugly hunk of metal.

You know, I was just thinking the other day. I was thinking, "Gee, I wish my Colt had a fixed barrel. I also wish it was more square boxy. My Colt isn't boxy enough. And hmm...I have about nine hundred dollars I can't find a use for..."

Wow, it's like they read my mind!

How exactly does that abomination work? Of course, the thing is so ugly you prolly won't have to pull the trigger-the target would die of revulsion:neener:

If fixed barrels are supposed to be the cats behind, hows come in this day and age there are no major center fire self shuckers with a fixed barrel? It would seem to me that a fixed barrel would be cheaper to manufacture than having a dropping barrel/turning barrel to unlock.

I think this thread points out just how conservative shooters tend to be!

Sorry about the cup o Joe, Tuner-but my goodness, dat thing so ugly, its middle name is D-A-A-A-A-M-M-M-M-N-N-N-N!

Sorry guy - the 92 does not have a fixed barrel. It doesn't tip down, but it definitely slides back and forth.

Nightcrawler, while I agree the DE is a fixed barrel, the 92 is not a fixed barrel pistol. The barrel and slide actually move back about a half an inch where the unlocking plunger hits the receiver and forces the locking wedge out of the grooves in the slide and down into the cammed surface of the receiver. The slide then goes a couple of inches more to eject, cock the hammer and strip a new case from the mag.

P7M8 has a fixed barrel. :)

This sounds a lot like the marvel conversion 22lr with its fixed barrel (but the Marvel looks a lot better). Does fixing the barrel put more stress on the frame?

if it shoots like they say,

it will be tempting ...
oh and tuner , ol john ain't spinning , hes laughing too hard....:neener:

That is a whole lotta ugly for only $850

I would like to think that $850 would go a long way towards making any 1911 more accurate..

And pretty!

The gadget works on a delayed blowback system similar to the Benelli B76.

The designer of the Hogue Avenger also designed the Wolf Ultramatic, which didn't work, either.

Hogue originally advertised their magnetic holster as suitable for IDPA, which it isn't.

I use their grips but don't consider their other producs in the same league.

The most expensive match barrel I know of for the 1911 is the Schuemann AET. It costs about $220 for the conventional 5" .45 ACP version. Add $110 for installation and you've spent $330. Not only is your 1911 not transformed unto something really ugly, you also probably have a more accurate gun than that silly thing, and have saved about $520.

Schuemann Barrels

Several years ago, I went all out on a pistol...Nothin' fancy, by anybody's standards...just took my time and fitted everything up nice and tight. I
used a Schuemann barrel for the project. To put it mildly, the thing was so wicked accurate that I wouldn't tell anybody about it unless I had an eyewitness on the scene, and I won't even go into group sizes here
for the same reason.

If match-grade accuracy is your goal...the money is well-spent on one of those barrels.

Luck!

Come on Tuner, now you HAVE to tell us.

What else did you do to the gun?

Not much, except weld and recut the frame rails and refit the slide. Put
a nice 4-pound trigger on it, and fit the barrel. It was a pre Series 70 GM complete with the small sights. A real sleeper...Looked like a garden variety Colt, but shot holes in paper at 50 yards thatwerethisclosetogether...and that's all I'm gonna say.:p

I will say this...MY hand and MY eyes couldn't shoot up to the gun.
Sandbagged was the only way I could show it off.

Plinkerton asked:

Do you still have the gun?

Nope. It belonged to somebody else when I worked it. I tried to buy it, but
he just laughed at me...

Cheers!

Tuner

Do you own one that's up to par with that one? I would imagine that at some point you have built yourself a 1911, to end all 1911's.
