Mother of All 1911s

Do you own one that's up to par with that one?

Nope...Not in the accuracy department. I think I got lucky with that one...
:p
______________________

I would imagine that at some point you have built yourself a 1911, to end all 1911's.

Nope...I built one about 5 years ago that I'd call Bling-Bling...upswept
ducktail safety...undercut trigger guard...fancy Novaks, and an old
Barsto barrel. It would also outshoot me, but not like that other one did.
Sandbagged 3-inch 50-yard groups with the right ammo...but I've never really been into the full customs. Nothing against'em, by any means...just not my cuppa tea. I've been more into salvaging and rebuilding the old
GIs and some commercial Colts. When I get through with'em, they look and shoot pretty much like what the are...or were originally. I tried to
maintain the fitting that was done to pre WW2 issue pistols. More accurate than was realized by most, and dead reliable.

I played with the pistol for about 4 months and sold it to a guy who wanted it more than I did.

My other thing was/is repair and reliablity tuning on problem guns...The ones that had been back to the factory and returned with the same problems. I get a charge out of fixing one in 10 minutes that the warranty station didn't nail. Doesn't happen too often, but often enough.

I also like to run up on a"deal" on basket case that the owner is tryin' to
dump on another poor sap. The best ones are around to see the gun run.
They get a sorta lost expression on their faces when I tell'em that it was somethin' simple...which it sometimes ain't...but I tell'em that anyway.
That'll teach'em to dump a lemon on a workin' stiff...

Aside from that, I'll leave the full customs to the big boys...The do create
some beauties, don't they?

Later on!

Who knows? Maybe this or the "Gas Gun" will eventually evolve into The Thing To Have for the any other centerfire stage of a bullseye match, or The Bee's Knees for Bianchi Cup (no need for a barricade tube...)

It's ugly as sin, and I have no need for one, but it may wind up having a niche: Time, Scores, and The Market will tell...

wait a minute.

this is blow back operated... most of the upper doesn't move, only the back part and the ejection port...

it's got a 1911 grip...

seems to me that with a better designer at the helm, one could make a ruger 22/45 clone... i suppose it'd be the 45/22 :D

Y'know, I love the 1911 as much as the next kid, but you gotta wonder if, on the old telegraph-powered gun boards of the turn of the last century, some guy named 1873Tuner wasn't crackin' wise about them newfangled whatsis that that goofy Mormon kid John was turnin' out... ;) :neener:

Hell, no need to touch it. No need to fire it. No need to prove anything. Just make fun of it 'cause you think it looks funny.

You know, a 1911 sure looks funny next to a Model P. Jams more, too. :scrutiny:

Damn Margo - that is Ugly! :D

I don't care if this is the autoloader forum...
I'm going to caress a Model 10, with the target wadcutters removed, admire a Case Yellow handled Trapper, and use my Zippo. I have a real need for simplicity after viewing that...that...Margo you have some serious 'plaining to do...:)

1873Tuner was my great grandpappy...and him and Johnny Browning was
boyhood buds...Played hookey and went fishin' and alla that stuff. Great
Grandpappy Tuner invented the tilting/barrel falling link design, but he couldn't get it to work in a single-action revolver, so he called Browning
up and told him to see if he could do anything with it in his newfangled
flat, cylinderless six-shooter.

:p <--------right back atcha!

In theory, sure. I think once everyone stops pointing and laughing at it for being SO ugly they'll grant that it could actually work.

Flipside is, the maker have given us no evidence to belive that it is any good, either. Just vague claims and a HUGE price tag. Heck, if they at least made specific claims we'd have something to verify.

F'rinstance, Springfield Armory says their Pro will shoot <=1.5" @ 25 yard with Golden Saber ammo. Might be true (FBI thinks so), or not, but at least it is something you can check. There is no way to confirm claims about being super-duper in general.

Me, I think if you make huge but vague claims about something ugly and expensve, people SHOULD make fun of you until you prove the merit of your product.

As for gas guns... I know a couple people tried them on 1911forum.com. Never actually, ahem, worked. That's a real downside, I think. :D

Laugh now, but just wait till this baby hits a score of 88!

Sean Smith,

One claim they're making that's relatively easy to verify, is that you can more-or-less permanently mount optics on this thing and pop it on and off your existing service pistol frame just like you already do with your Marvel .22 upper.

The Big Questions, of course, are "Does It Run?" and "Is It Accurate?" Until someone tries it, we won't know. (I'd be willing to bet that at least a couple bullseye shooters will be getting free units from Hogue by way of sponsorship.) :uhoh:

So, to reiterate: It's ugly, I don't want one, but it may have a use. I'm curious to find out...

Hogue Avenger-45 ACP

Put mine together a few days ago.It is a lever delayed blow back system-lead bullets don't effect delay system.Use of shims and minor hand fitting was all that was needed to obtain zero H & V play between bbl and frame. The bbl is made by BarSto-it is a match bull bbl and is free floated. The bbl axis is actually slightly lower than 1911 bbl.Balance feels like a 1911 with a rib.Because the moving mass is less than a 1911-there is little rotational torque, less apparent muzzle flip, less apparent felt recoil and seems like faster shot recovery. The recoil pulse is quicker-an advantage I think.Rear sight is adj. I don't like the front sight-is in not for BE shooting.Hogue customer svc is quite good so far. They are going to exchange the combat sight for a HB type front blade.Accuracy was as good as any of my custom target pistols-so far.It comes with a Picatinny rail and slide rackers.I put a scope on pistol and randomly tested LSWC-no load development.Using 4.1g/BE and 3.85g/N310 at 25 yards for preliminary testing-looking for trends. Wanting a load for 50 yards in a H&G 68 shape I found 3 to 5 cast bullets that shot .7 to 1.25"-with no varying of powder. Will do some serious load develpoment using BE,Clay and N310 powder.Quality, fit, finish and design concept of this conversion unit is quite impressive. I didn't pay list price either.Cheers
