hate to sound obvious and redundant, but... ruger 10 22!
mine has taken more squirrels than i can count, and a few rabbits; and i love it! Butler creek steel lip mags are the 25 rnd mags to get, and I would suggest some sort of optic. Right now mine boasts a simmons 3-9 x 50 scope. It is very compact (i have the carbine model) and that helps when fighting through swamps to get to the untouched squirrels' nests that it is so good at "eradicating"! it feeds copper plated rounds better, but if you're careful, regular non plated rounds work just fine. Though I haven't tried, a scope, 25 rnd mag, and cci stingers would make a great long range anti- prairie dog or gopher gun! (NW Florida doesn't have much for a 22 besides squirrels, possums, snakes, and rabbits!)

The majority of people are gonna say either a 10/22 or a Marlin 60. There's nothing wrong with either, but they aren't to only game in town. You might give a Remington 552 Speedmaster a look. The great thing about them is they will feed shorts, longs and long rifles. Before it gets pointed out....Yes, it costs more than the other two.

I'd consider used and save some coin. If I considered used, I would also look into a Remington 550. They will also feed all three shells. They haven't been made in nearly 40 years, but are still fairly easy to find. I have a couple. One my grandfather bought in 1951 that has had 4 generations of shooting and general abuse that comes on a farm. It still works flawlessly. The other is a near mint 1953 that I bought a while back. It shoots great. I thought I got a deal when I bought it for $210. My brother outdid me and found one nearly as nice for $150...The wood and metal on these guns is waayyy better than any new gun you will buy.

The answer lies at the gun shop.

Marlin, Ruger, Browning, and others make perfectly good budget semiauto .22 rifles. Try picking some of them up, putting them to the shoulder, fiddling witgh the various controls, comparing magazine capacity / price / etc and generally actually looking at them.

It isn't a life-changing choice, you're going to end up with more than one anyway.

I like the 10/22. You might like the Marlin 60, 70 or 795 better. Browning makes a buckmark carbine and they may still produce their breakdown rifle. KelTec makes an AR-15-ish gun and various other make an AR-wannabe as well. Henry makes fun lever-guns and the AR-7.

But if your goal is to replace a Win190 a Marlin model 60 is probably the closest modern equivalent ... I just don't dig tube mags on semi-autos.

The 10/22 has hands down the biggest aftermarket support of any 22. You can turn one into a target gun, ultralight pack gun, M1 Carbine trainer, AR look clone, even a very credible Thompson lookalike. It is the number recommended rifle for Appleseeds.

nothing wrong with the other choices...it is just the 10/22 has many advantages.

As some have noted, a lot of good ones available. Mostly it`s what catches your eye and pocket book.
Try you local Gun Show,if you have one and then you can look at and handle just about everything going. :)

CZhas a new 22 autoloader the model 512 you may want to check it out also. They are going to add a 22mag auto within the year.

Well I got a 10/22 and a Marlin 795 while the 10/22 is so customizable its not as good out of the box. Many say that Marlin's aren't customizable but ATI makes a cool stock and a few others as well as slings scopes and all that good stuff.

Beyond looks the marlin will just shoot anything, my 10/22 is picky even clean. Although I have to say remington bulk is junk my last batch liked to expload backwards in all my .22s. If you want a good hunting/plinker marlin's are crazy accurate in comparison to the 10/22 because they use micro grove barrels plus my 795 is only about 5 pounds and looks just as good with the ATI stock and some techsights. All this many appleseed shooters use and love more than the 10/22.

Look it up though, my Marlin was only 100 bucks ruger 250. for the price difference I like my Marlin better.

My suggestion...

I've had a Remington 552 for 20+ years and have been very pleased with it. Just don't use Remington ammo and you'll be happy. ;)

Hmmmm. Light varmint. First time i hear about that version but a darn good idea. I'm not a 10 22 fan but i like that one.

Depends on what you want. The 10/22 and model 60 are good rifles. Work well for a lot of things. I really like cz guns, and their older 511 is worth its weight in gold. The new 512 seems like a decent alternative as well. I also recently bought a smith and wesson 15-22. It has been a load of fun. Mine cycles everything and is accurate enough for a fun gun.

marlin 795. regular price is $140 and you can get a $25 mail in rebate coupon off marlin's website. catch it on sale at dick's and you can probably get it for right at $100. i got one for my wife for squirrel hunting and i find myself taking it when i go alone because it outshoots my 10/22 all day. headshots on squirrels are so easy at 50 yds it's not even fun. if you like to plink, it'll feed the snot out of cheap federal bulk, whereas my 10/22 is somewhat picky, especially when dirty.

Thompson Center made a semi-auto .22 rifle briefly. Never owned one, but I figured it would be a good one. Gunbroker lists 2, and they are proud of them... $400 +

Are they worth it?

10-22, if you want an autoloader, and the target model if you want good (not great) trigger, and really good out of the box accuracy.

If you liked your 190 tube fed rifle, a Marlin Model 60 may suit you just as well and not too expensive either.
I bought mine brand new for less than $150 about 6 months ago. Very satisfied.
