best semi-auto 22?

I would not be able to say what is "best" but I betcha the Marlin 60 has the best dollar value.

That's for sure. The Marlin and the Ruger used to be close in price. Ruger figured they could jack up the price for the same rifle -- actually I think the new wood stocks are inferior, not the same. Marlin, on the other hand, started including laminate stocks with basic models, and didn't jack up the price more than the general increase over time.

We'll see how my new Marlin 60 works out for me. Bought one because it was on sale and looks like the perfect mate for a scope that's in my closet. Should make a nice small game and practice rifle.

Ruger's price would be justified if they made the Deluxe Sporter the standard model, but otherwise I think they've gotten a bit greedy. I guess the market will bear it, so more power to 'em. But I know I will think twice before buying another 10/22.

WRT the SA-22 being overrated, sounds right. I haven't owned one. I'd really consider the Remington 552, though I can't say I've ever actually seen one. Love my Marlin 39A, but it's not a semiauto. Well worth the money, believe it or not.

I'd really consider the Remington 552,
Shouldn't be too hard they have been in production since 1957, 50 years now. No idea how many have been made though.
It is surprising how few you see for sale huh? What's that tell ya?
Buddy had one when we were kids, it was a good gun, I have always kinda wanted one.

Oh, I'm aware of what that tells me.

Just bought my second Marlin 39 for the same reason.

Do you have a 552?

Like I said, I have seen few, if any. I'd love to try one, but I can't even see if I like the fit, if I never see one!:)

Dealers seem to want to push 10/22's. Maybe the profit from aftermarket barrels, stocks, etc. on the other side of the counter have something to do with that.:p

Cannot beat a 10/22... so many options out there. Get a used SS 10/22 at a gun show (about 150 bucks) and soup it up with a green Mountail bull barrel (.920), then a Hoague stock & a GOOD scope. The trigger job shoudl be done too... if you want to hit tight groups. A verapod is cool too. Awesome Prairie Dog Gun... if you can sneak-up to within 200yds.

Here's a little secret: the Stainless 10/22 has a stainless barrel. The rest of the gun is just silver instead of black. If you're going to toss the barrel, just get the blue one and save some money on the used gun you start with.

Has anyone ever read the story of Stone Soup?:D

No but have always kinda wanted one. Have had Marlin 60 and 10/22's. I'm on my 3rd 39. Sold the last one to raise bucks for a Harley and FINALLY after a several year search, found one made the year I was born. 39's are my favorite of all the 22's I have ever had. We have a dozen or so 22's now, but 39's are top of the list IMO.
Not bashing any 22 here, I really like my CZ or the old Winchester's and Remington's etc. we own. I have shot or owned a lot of nice 22's over the years, but there's just something special to me about a Marlin 39, and they are the oldest production gun still made.

I will probably have to buy a 3rd 39, at least, since my second is a rare variant that I may not feel right about bashing around. Next I need a regular 39M...:)

For some reason, my wife didn't even ask why, when I recently bought a 39A, I really needed to buy the 39M at the shop...

But I bet it was GOOD soup!

LOL

Reminds me of a mechanic's apocryphal advice for fixing a car: "Jack up the antenna and replace everything under it!"

I've never been quite sure how a gun that has a different stock, barrel, trigger, and other action parts can really be called a 10/22.

That'd be like calling a friend's gorgeous figured-walnut all-custom sub-sub-MOA hunting rifle "an old Mexican Mauser."

Ruger 10/22, I've shot the Marlin 60, but wasn't too impressed. Just my personal opinion. here is mine with a butler creek folding stock and BSA $30 Wal-Mart scope! Can someone say... Bling!?

how about the Marlin 795

Basically a clip fed Model 60....gives you the loading convience of the 10/22 and the out of the box accuracy of the m60.....Also trust me WAAAyyy:cool: more accurate out of the box than the 10/22. True enough there arent many after market mods for them......so if you want to drop a grand:eek: on making a .22 a tack driver go for the 10/22....if you want to spend under 130 for a rifle that is already accurate go for the Marlin.

T/C or Browning for best made and accurate
The Marlinsw I've shot had decent acuracy
The 10/22s are fun and are the best tinkering gun
The REM 597 is pretty good on accuracy, but piss poor in workmanship and reliability.

If I had to choose one, it would be the 10/22.

For out of box accuracy, I gotta go with Marlin. Either the 60 or the 795 is the way to go.

Ruger 10/22's can be made into tackdrivers but require a lot of aftermarket parts. They are getting better IMHO, after shooting a new SS 10/22 last Christmas I was impressed at the accuracy of that particular rifle.
I believe that with the passing of Bill Ruger that the company may be starting to take accuracy in their rifles seriously.

+1 for the Marlin. Have a 60 and 7000, both shoot half inch groups at 50 yards and both function perfectly.
