Saw an ad in a magazine last night for a new model Remington shotgun. The 870 DM. It has a 3 or 6 round detachable magazine, which I suppose is what the DM stands for. Looks like a regular 870 in every other way only without the mag tube.

If you need to reload a weapon so fast that you need a detachable mag, then maybe a weapon with a capacity of only 6 that is pump action isn't the right answer. I think I'll just stick to the original 1950 recipe.

It seams like a good idea to me especially if you have a sidesaddle and a +2 extension on your 870 . This would cut some weight and you would have a faster reload . I haven't held one yet , but it might even handle better with the weight of the shells not being in a tube .

If it runs properly it will probably be my next shotgun purchase. To me the mags aren't so much for quick reloads- although that 's a bonus. To me it's a good workaround to the old "cruiser ready" storage method that I have never been crazy about. Plus if you're in a jurisdiction where you can have a shotgun in a vehicle but not loaded this would be a quick way to load the gun in an emergency.

There is also the fact that the only shells that will stay reliable when loaded in the mag for any time are full brass shells. Plastic hulls will deform quicker in a box mag than they do in tubes. I agree with FL-NC, I'll stick with my tube mag 870.

this new Remington 870 is not an innovation...Atis Armi, out of Val Trompia in northern Italy, came up with a detachable mag 12 gauge for US sales, this was back in the early to mid nineties, it just looked a lot better than the Remington copycat. It did not catch on apparently because, it was said at the time, t's a solution in search of a problem. I certainly don't want that monstrous appendage in a home defense situation.

I'll stick with my tube gun as well. Magazines take a little time to reload, but I can shove shells in my tube gun a couple at a time and keep shooting, should a battalion ever attack my home.

I can sorta see it. The problem with extended tube magazines (say, 6- to 8-rounders) is that they make the guns extremely muzzle-heavy. A box magazine would bring the weight back to the point of balance. The 3-round box magazine is no advantage, but anything larger might be useful. Personally, I'm not in the market for yet another shotgun, but if I were, I would consider this. (We're really talking about tactical applications only.)

If the mag holds three that would d.q. it in some states with a three shot total limit. (3+1). For deer and waterfowl, at least in the people's republik of Il.
