My dad came over and gave me my Birthday/Christmas present. It's one of his custom rifles he had built out of spite for the 300 WSM.

Action is a Pre-'64 Model 70 (of course, most of his custom rifles are), barrel started out as an XTR Featherweight 22" in .308 and was re-chambered in .30-06 Ackley Improved. The stock was done by Boyds.

As with most of his gift rifles, the scope was replaced by a cheap but serviceable one.

It is a handy and relatively light rifle perfect for Elk and deer in Idaho. Weighs in at 8.5 lbs.

AWESOME! Congrats dude!

Nice background on the cartridge photo. And a really nice rifle too. Handsome stock. Like an ebony fore end tip like that and the checkering is quality. A top shelf rifle that begs to be used for it's purpose.

That is one sweet rifle! I can see your dad and I think alike. Winchester 70 actions with all the right features, no need for magnumitis, what a swell father to have!

That quarter sawn stock is beautiful! Make sure you make the most of his gift while he is still around for him to see it!

180gr at 3,000fps will hunt anywhere that's for sure, seems on the edge on pressure.

thanks for sharing!

Not only is it stunningly beautiful and elegant, it's off the charts in terms of a Christmas gift, IMHO. Plus; it's in a great chambering as well. Although I'm another one that doesn't get the anti 300 WSM sentiment. Been a 300 WSM owner since 2004 and I like it.

What a nice looking rifle. Dad deserves a big hug and a tearful thank you. I didn't know Boyds could make a stock that nice.

But I have one question. If the rifle started out as a .308 how is it able to handle a 30-06 length round? I thought the action was a half inch shorter for the 308 round.

The world today needs more rifles like this. Great looking rig! I would guess a 30-06 AI would be pretty close to a 30 Gibbs, at least that's what your cartridge pic reminded me of. Thanks for sharing.
