I received a new firearm borescope for Christmas. It has been really interesting looking at all my firearm barrels and learning how to use the new tool. It has its own screen and can be used without needing to use other devices like my phone.

One interesting find I had is on my Beretta 686 28ga shotgun. I bought the gun used and it has always shot very well for my clay uses. In fact 28ga is my favorite since I purchased the shotgun. However, since the beginning of ownership I would clean it after use and store it away with a clean shiny oiled barrel etc. Maybe a month later I would see streaks in the forcing cone area that looked like rust. My own shotgun cleaning experiences assured me no wad plastic was remaining in the barrel. Multiple cleanings would not alter the return of the streaks in time. A dry patch would come out looking rusty after the gun would sit for a month or two between uses. It had puzzled me for a while now.

This week my borescope revealed the culprit to what I was seeing. The chrome was coming off inside the barrel at that forcing cone area. The shotgun is still useful, and I have no idea what cleaning techniques were used before my ownership. Maybe they used an ammonia based cleaner is all I could think of that might have caused the issue. The shotgun doesn't look worn out or abused by any stretch of observation. Manufacture date was in 2006, so the shotgun isn't that old.

I wonder why the rust comes back in those spots over time even after cleaning and oiling inside of the barrel? Thoughts?

I see where you're coming from, I think.

Assuming you're like me, that rust is always going to bother you. I always have it in my mind what if I don't keep it freshly oiled, it'll turn from patina to pitting.
