I'm looking o buy a new handgun for concealed carry and I don't know what to go with. For the most part I carry a Glock 19, and sometimes my Sig P220. I like the stopping power of the .45 but don't like the low mag count, I like the amount in the G19 but don't really trust the stopping power of the 9mm. I'm looking to upgrade from 9mm to either .40s&w or .357sig. The two guns I'm thinking about are the Sig P229 or the Glock 23/32. Let me know what yall think.

I lkie the 45 also

I also like the 45 auto. I carry the S&W M&P 45 it has 10+1 cap. I believe that is enough for almost any situation. If I have not hit my target by then I probably would already be dead. I also like the trigger safety design. When you draw gun it is ready to fire, no other safety to worry about. Many guns are that way now and I would not carry any other kind for personal defense. Some other manufactuers have even higher cap 45. I suggest look around and go with what feels right ot you.

Good Luck

You are doing exactly what I would NOT do.

The G-19 is one of the best all-around pistols there is. My new wife wants one, I'll probably get it for her soon.

The P-220 is a fantastic gun. If I wasn't so well-matched to a 1911, I would give it a serious look. Not a thing wrong with it.

There is nothing wrong with a 9mm. Particularly with good modern ammo. I prefer 147 gr sub-sonic HSTs.

I stopped carrying a .40. It is a good compromise of something, but it isn't a good compromise of others. You get more muzzle energy than a 9mm or a .45, but I quit believing in muzzle energy as the decisive factor in stopping with a pistol. It causes less cavity trauma than a .45, and has less capacity than a 9mm. And it has snappier recoil than a .45 OR a 9mm. And if I really wanted to maximize the idea, I would want a 10mm, loaded full-house.

For me, a .357 SIG is something I might consider for a sub-compact gun, where I thought the 9mm loses a lot of velocity.

I'm not too worried about capacity. In real life, I don't live in Melgibsonland where you are going to empty your pistol without having two seconds to reload. I think that being able to clear a malfunction in a pistol with ANY capacity is much more important than having more rounds to fire. If I'm in trouble I can't solve with a 1911, it's unlikely that I would be able to solve it with any other pistol either. (I would be wishing I had a serious rifle.)

I see no reason at all to move from what you've got.

Alphach64, I have heard little about the s&w m&p pistols, are they worth it. I've never ha problems with my glock and sig and have not really branched. Also, I have to drive through Iowa on Thursday, how's the weather, I hope no snow.

Mljdeckard, I'm going to keep both the glock and sig I have, I'm looking to pickup a new firearm to fill the same roll as the other two, although I am not as trusting of the 9mm's stopping power after some of the research I've done. And my Sig is full sized and a pain to carry when it's not jacket weather. What would your recommend? I am not limiting myself to the two calibers I listed or pistols for that matter.

This is the truth. Do a little homework and pick a good 9mm round to carry. The glock 19 is a fantastic carry weapon. There are insignificant differences between a good 9mm and a good 40 or 45. This has not always been the case, but today's ammo has solved that problem. I like speer gold dots, but most 124+p JHP is pretty good.

However, you asked about the sig p229 and/or the glock 23/32.
I like the glock 23, simply because I have more trigger time on glocks then sigs. I think that the glock 23 is a little more size and weight efficient then the sig p229. The p229 is a good gun though, and fun to shoot. Let us know what you decide on.

Jon86, In both my glock and sig I'm using federal hydra shok jhp, 147g for Glock, and I think 230g for my sig, this is the round my dad carryed when he was on the force and what both he and my brother suggested. How does this round stack up against others, say the Speer gold dot.

They were well represented as a 9mm gun of choice at the 2011 IDPA World Championship. Of course Glock overshadowed all, but the presence of other polymer pistols was minimal.

Well said. I don't think the average person out there will need lots of rounds. I carry a 9mm with 15 in the mag sometimes, but I never carry a spare. If I've used all 15 rounds, chances are I am involved in something very very bad and I should be thinking about getting away rather than reloading. I also don't subscribe to the belief that it has to start with a "4" to be effective for self-defense.

TexasJim,
Since you are considering the Sig P229, I would suggest also looking at the SP2022 in .40 S&W, basically the only difference between the 2 other than price is the polymer frame and the manner in which they are field stripped and the 9mm version that I have has been highly reliable.

A doctor friend of mine who has many years experience in trama units told me something one day and I will quote him here. "If you want to shoot someone use a 9mm, if you want to kill 'em use a .45." Science of ballistics aside, I think his years of experience speaks volumes. I carry either one on a regular basis and I don't really feel under gunned with a 9mm or .45.

If I was from or in Texas I would want both.......heard some rumors.:uhoh: Have you seen hi-cap FNP 45?

The main reason for carrying a extra mag is not for more rounds but for a mag change in case of a failure. How do you retain the dropped mag during a stovepipe or a FTE. Much better to have a extra mag in those cases. Mags also can fail.
I find it hard to carry an extra most times though.

In answer to the OP. Find the gun that you shoot the best and stick with it. You have one of the best carry guns available in the G19. But if your itching for change get the G36 in 45. Get something that feels the same as the G19 and you will have better transfer ability from gun to gun.

I have and carry a M&P 45 compact. I used to carry a g19, the M&P 45 compact is smaller than the glock 19 in every dimension except slide width, but it is thinner in the frame than the glock. The slide width is very close, actually the m&p slide will go on the rails of the 19s frame but stops with about 1 inch to go.

I carry a flush fit mag with 8+1 of 200 grain +p Gold dots. What more could you want?
