My youngest will be 16 later this month. Two years ago I decided to build her the "perfect" youth hunting rifle for a young lady. I had a spare M-70 action lying around and was badly in need of a barrel and a stock. After much back and forth with a my gun smith buddy up in Wyoming we decided to be different and go with a 6.5-06. The rifle wears a 26" medium weight Pac Nor and he had a D'Arcy stock sitting in his shop collecting dust. Over the course of a year he put the rifle together for my daughter. Once it arrived I topped it with a Ziess 2x10 HD-5 with a Rapid Z 600 reticule.
We worked up a load with 140 gr Nosler BT or AB @ about 2850 FPS and the rifle delivers them with very mild recoil and very good and consistent accuracy. Off the bench my girl was able to mostly stay inside of 1 MOA out to 500 yards on a calm day. The rifle is a joy to shoot, it is accurate and has enough power and penetration for any hunting she might be doing in North America in the near future. It has turned out to be a the perfect hunting rifle for her. The rifle has boosted her confidence and she enjoys shooting it.
Last year on it's first test run in the field she killed a nice buck antelope off of a tripod rest at 328 yards with one shot. This rifle appears to be a match made in heaven for her. She's got another antelope, a black bear and possible an elk on the plate for this year. I'm sure she is going to put some meat on the table with her new rifle this season. The combination of mild recoil, adequate power, flat trajectory, great SD and BC, make the various 6.5's a really great choice for a new hunter or any hunter for that matter.
