Powder coating lead bullets now comes to factory loaded ammo.

New SYNTECH from Federal Premium ammo. Also loaded with lead free primers.

The polymer coating in all-new American Eagle Syntech prevents harsh metal-on-metal contact between the bullet and bore, eliminating copper and lead fouling. Combined with clean-burning powders and the Catalyst™ lead-free primer, Syntech loads keep your gun cleaner, longer, so you can shoot more—and shoot better.

Polymer-encapsulated Syntech bullet prevents metal-on-metal contact in the bore, eliminating copper and lead fouling, while extending barrel life
• Exclusive primer formulation provides reliable, consistent ignition
• Clean-burning propellants minimize residue and fouling
• Significantly reduces the required frequency of cleaning
• Absence of a copper jacket minimizes splash-back on steel targets

I think it was just a matter of time until some factory started making coated bullet ammo. Good job Federal, you're finding out what all us powder coaters have known for some time now. You're welcome for us doing your homework! :neener::D

They introduced them at the SHOT Show last January. I believe they're probably aimed at the market for indoor ranges, where lead in the air has become a problem. With no exposed lead, and NT primers, it seems they'd be ideal for that environment.

Hope this helps.

Lead free primers have been out for awhile now. As for the bullets themselves it was my understanding they are all polymer. Maybe someone got some facts confused in one article or the other?

I think I remember reading about these a little while back. Main thing that stuck out for me was that they were crazy expensive, even more than their jacketed rounds. Which really made me scratch my head cause shouldn't coated lead rounds be cheaper to produce? I can't imagine that lead free primers would be THAT much more expensive.

They are indeed a lead bullet that is polymer coated. At the SHOT Show, they had several samples they had flattened with a hammer to show that the coating didn't crack when pounded flat.

The primers are Diazodinitrophenol (DDNP) primed, or in layman's terms, Non-toxic.

Hope this helps.

As a re-loader, I would expect coated bullets to be cheaper than plated or jacketed. However, it seems that I can not find a source for bullets cheaper than XTreme plated. Even with the recent price increase at XTreme, the coated ones are still a bit more expensive by the time they reach my front door.
Please give me an example where I am wrong.

Xtreme plated 230gn .45: $61.50 Missouri Hitek coated 230gn: $53.50

I didn't look to see what the shipping was for either, so that may make a difference.

Federal has seen the powdercoaters(here & other places) success .... saw $$$$$ .... decided to give it a go .... got be cheaper to make(for them) and then sell it at a premium !!
