As always, eager am I to get THR's take on latest developments in the Free State:

New Hampshire House votes to defy Fed ID
March 12, 2006

Libertarians are celebrating after the New Hampshire House of Representatives voted 270-84 to refuse cooperation
with the hated "Real ID" act. Real ID is a Federal mandate which attempts to force states into a standardized drivers license system at taxpayer expense. Freedom advocates argue it would be at the expense of privacy as well, giving the Feds too much power along the way. Federal officials have said it would help them track terrorists and criminals.

"Give me liberty or give me death," said State Rep Neal Kurk, speaking in favor of the bill on the House floor. The chamber roared with applause.

House Bill 1582 forbids all state agencies from participation in Real ID mandates, and asserts that Real ID "is contrary and repugnant to Articles 1 through 10 of the New Hampshire constitution..."

The lopsided anti-Federal vote was a shock even to proponents of the bill. Real ID passed the U.S. Senate 100-0 last year and generated little debate. But as states like New Hampshire have taken a closer look at what it will require of them, liberty activists and local government officials have been teaming up to draw a line in the sand between Washington and their own states.

New Hampshire in particular has become increasingly restive since 2003, when it became a migratory destination for "Free Staters," libertarian activists who move into the state to fight for freedom.

HB 1582 next goes to the New Hampshire Senate; if it passes there it will have to be signed by the Governor. In the meantime, Federal pressure will likely mount in opposition to this bill.

I think the key words here are "at taxpayer expense." I support the idea. However, I think the privacy side of the issue is trying to close the barn door after the horse has left.

Now how'bout going out on a limb and declaring the 16th Amendment null and void?

my dad just sold 3 acres of undeveloped land right at the foot of the white mountains....aaarrrrrrrgghhhhh! lack of foresight. that would have been a wonderful place to have been able to 'relocate' to.

That man has more courage than a decent percentage of our population.

Others may stand up as well; I pray they do.

Can someone provide a link to the Real ID Act.
On the surface a national DL doesn't sound any more ominus than when they standardized them all back in the 80's.

But I am totally unfamiliar with the program

How hard is it to make a living in New Hampshire. Man that sounds like my kind of state.

I love this state, but you do need a good income and current job skills. There's a lot of high-tech and bio/medical here. Lots of R&D parks.

The northern parts are more rural. The southern parts, where Concord (the capital), Manchester and Nashua are, the only large cities, is a bit more expensive. $200k for a condo, $350k for a small house, and condo developers are busily buying up all the affordeable apartments to make them into $200k condos. No sales tax, but property taxes are a little high.

CCW is easy to get, open carry is legal, (but unwise in the southern half due to easily-alarmed blissninnies leaking in from MA), and the police are nice, not adversarial.

<<CCW is easy to get, open carry is legal, (but unwise in the southern half >>

then i guess i'm unwise LOL

i've done it maybe 20 or 30 times and got hassled by cops 2x, once amicably once rudely. It's one way to educate them on our rights and the m???????s on our defenses.

Perhaps they missed that Real ID compliance is tied to appropriations. Want the money? Pay the blackmail in the form of compliance. This is what I hate about the income tax. Conditional appropriations should be illegal.

NH gets back a lot less in fed dollars than most of the states, but to take full advantage of that we'd need to get more people refusing to pay their fed tax.

I like the idea of a bill that forbids NH law enforcement or other officials from cooperating with the feds on fed taxes.

In answer to the question about making a living in NH you should know that the cost of living is higher than the national average but lower than most of the northeast. There is something of a housing shortage also. On the other hand we have the highest per capita income or close to it. Tech jobs are in good supply and help wanted signs are a common sight, although I feel like I saw more of them a year ago than I do currently. This overview does not apply to northern NH , however, where the cost of land is low and jobs are not in plentiful supply.

One thing to consider when moving to NH...if you are part of the freedom movement you'll have a ready-made social network to hop into , sell to, buy from, etc. It's kind of helpful from an economic standpoint compared to just moving anywhere for usual reasons.

Alaska passed a law forbidding AK LE from participating in PATRIOT Act investigations with the feds.
I would hope our legislature would follow NH's lead and enact similar legislation.
Too bad I'm out here in Aleutian Hell, I would contact my Fairbanks reps and put a bug in their ear.

I applaud the N.H. house. How's the Wild Turkey population up there?

At pest level from White mountains south. Hate themas they eat partidge eggs and chicks, the F&G says no but cannot explain why they are way down where turkeys are because they are the only succsess story they have.

Pretty big rally is now scheduled in front of the NH state house on 4/22, organized by CASPIAN (NH based privacy organization). I was at the meeting where they planned it, that was on March 23rd...as of the 26th they had 100 people RSVP'd saying they'd show up. Everyone already seems to know about it. Not real sure how that happened LOL. Today 200 NH libertarians showed for a film showing so respectable numbers are may be doable even in this low population state.

If the rally is of sufficient size and publicity it should help spur the Senators our way; I think they are curretly leaning against us but I kinda doubt there will be a rally held by the other side LOL.

details on the rally are at the NHfree.com forum:

This from the organization forum for that demonstration!

This is going to be a full fledged publicity stunt, probably including some kind of concentration camp theme. CASPIAN may also try to make it something of a national event with folks coming from all over.

***?! NO!!! NH does NOT need that kind of moonbat whackjob nonsense going on! :cuss: :cuss:

The legislators ALREADY voted to defy Real ID...what's the point of making nice quiet NH look like the UC Berkely campus? Don't these people have JOBS to be at?

Go FIND ANOTHER STATE to be disruptive in! WE don't need that nonsense! We do things the old-fashioned way..we go to JOBS, we WORK, and we VOTE for who we want. We don't run around making the cops' days miserable with signs like spoiled college kids!

You are going to make the senators vote the OTHER way!!!!

That darn first amendment! Who needs freedom of assembly in today's world? We should write it out of the constitution!
