Any NH'ers out there that know of a "common spot" range on public land?

I was reading the Fish/game's website, and they noted that any state owned land is open for hunting/shooting, but I'd prefer a spot that is used often for that process. I really don't want to disturb any hunters by blowing off 100 rounds of 9mm if I can avoid it.

I'm in Southern NH, but the wife and I were planning on a 1-1 1/2 hour drive tomorrow to find a spot (Thinking around the Sutton area), figured it couldn't hurt to ask here first.

Thanks!

Where is a public paid range in southern NH? The closest think may be Pemi where you can join for something like $5.00.

Why not just join one of the several clubs in the area and save the drive.

We went to the Manchester Firing Line (14.50/hr) and they have many guns for rent (Including several FA's like MP5's, AK's, M16's, and even an M60 you can rent) The rentals are various prices.

It's located right next to the Manchester Airport...

I just know that many states have "open ranges" on public land, in the middle of nowhere...

The wife and I are planning on joining our local F&G that has an outdoor and indoor range, but the process takes time, so we need a place to shoot for free in the mean time.

Their site is http://www.gunsnh.com

Thanks :)

Hey!

I live up in Franconia, so it's a bit more sparse than where you are. My rec. would be to go to the local PD's and ask them where they shoot, or do they know of any pits around that you can get permission at. I always got a kick that people would actually spend $$ to go to a range when we have so much forest around esp. in NH.

--You can shoot anywhere in the National Forest as long as you 1. Don't shoot across any trail, snowmobile trail, tentsite 2. are at least 15 feet off the right of way 3. are at least 1/4 mile from any campground, forest service wayside/ranger station, trailhead (parking areas), etc. Otherwise, go nuts. If anyone gives you a hard time tell them to call the cops and deal with them. Alot of people aren't aware of the rules. I shoot all the time in Easton just up a National Forest hiking trail a ways, never been a problem.

--State Forests will be similar in the ruling, but you don't see alot of it around here anyway (Franconia Notch State Park is just way too busy).

--Local sand/gravel pits or other private property.....just get permission

Hope this helps!!!

This is a good question. I live in the capital area and usually travel down to Manchester Firing line. But it's quite a drive, a little pricey, and usually pretty busy. I'd love to find a local pit or public land range of some sort.

Have you had any luck?

The idea of checking with the local PD is a good one. Then, even if someone gives you a hard time, you've already got support from LE.

Lord Gibson - It might be closer for you to go up to the Belmont range... Same owners as Manchester but a smaller range. Bob Gilespie runs the Belmont shop and he's a great guy to deal with. I shoot there during the winter. Their somewhat expensive but I started reloading to subsidize the cost of winter indoor range time. We'll see how well that one works out ;).

During the summer I use the Warner Fish and Game Club. It's a little 150 yard, no frills type range but it's only $35/year to join. Attached are a couple of pics I took while testing out some reloads this afternoon. If anyone is interested in joining feel free to send me a PM. We don't have a website yet (I'm working on it as we speak..) but I can send you the info. Unfortunately, the next possible meeting for new membership won't be until the end of January but I can give you the info or show you the range any time.

Great gaping granite Blind Bat....

table the web site and get some fill behind that target board.

Or is the flat slab of exposed ledge behind the target board part of some improv. ricochet bullet retrieval system?

Dues are a little bit pricey....$125/yr. But you get a lot of facilities for that.

I don't belong, as I have my local R&G club 2 miles from my house....

But I know several guys that do and they rave about the place all the time....(but have yet to invite me as their guest :()

I shoot at a privately owned pit in Jaffrey NH where I have landowner permission - drop me a line and maybe I can hook you up.

SSN Vet you got most of it right but there are a few areas that need some correction.

Dues are $150 for the first year which includes the initiation fee. After that it is $75 a year for a individual member and $90 for a family.

The shotgun sports have installed a whoble trap and will be improving the house to take full advantage. All shotgun sports are open to non-members at a higher cost per round. We recently replaced the skeet/trop pads...

All of the NRA Course held are open to the public as are the matches held during the year.

The indoor range use is restricted until the applicant is a member for at least one year. Then he/she can apply for access after testing by the Indoor Range chairman.

There is a work requirement or a payment of a yearly $35.00 fee.

We also open the indoor range every Thursday night from 7 to 9pm for non-members and members who have not gained unrestricted access yet. cost is $10 for a non-member and $3.00 for a member.

SSNVet if youy would like to see the club I'd be happy to have you over as a guest......

It's actually not as bad as it looks from the pics but we do need to get off our butts rebuild the backstop. We're a small, informal club and unfortunately that project had to get pushed back until next spring for sad reasons I'd prefer not to get into in this setting.

On the other hand if we were to install a granite backstop I could shoot off hand and use a baseball mitt on weak hand to catch the rebounding lead. That lead could be melted down and recast. Of course the money I'd save in lead would go to offset the cost of kevlar underwear. :)
