I don't expect a different result because of my experience as an IT professional (Oracle developer/DBA), not because I'm an FFL. NICS queries a bunch of databases. If nothing in the OP's data changes, and the same query is run, I wouldn't expect a different outcome.

Nay sayers were correct (so far). It got a delay. I dont know what that means the odds are of it being denied on the last day again are though.

Looking at the brochure, last page, "Note: If denied, your name will be included in a file accessible to law enforcement".

So in theory, even though NICS shreds the transaction within 24 hours (?), if nothing else changes, when a denied person tries again, NICS will presumably query the same file they put the person's name into, and voila, they know the person was previously denied.

I probably watched too much Perry Mason as a kid :)

This happen to me, but was a little different and I might understand why. I was originally convicted of something I didnt do, later on I was cleared. I had to go thought hell and hi water to fix everything ( well not really but it was a pain ). Either way after that I always got delay, but I would never put my SS, so I got the great idea to put my SS down on the last gun i bought. Well guess what there was a denial. So my process is the one that is a easy fix some times, you just email the nics with the proper doc's that show you are good to go. Since this is on my record, even tho it shows dismissed it doesnt matter, I can get denial every time unless I get the pin nics puts out. So that is what I am done right now as I type this out. I had bought 3 other firearms before this and have a ccp of my state, just a pain in the ass really.

Would it be a red flag or bad idea (I REALLY WANT TO), just go to another place and try again, and see what happens before persuing to the ATF for reasoning?
Both.

Get the transaction number from the shop, contact the FBI. Learn the reason for the denial and appeal it.

There -is- a process here, do yourself a favor and follow it, 'cause it's the only way this will get resolved.
