I have some holsters coming to me in the coming weeks and thought I saw some info on this site or another that talked about how to prep a new holster so that it won't wear the finish on a blued gun. The guns in question are a pair of Taurus revolvers, so I don't think they are the classic bluing found on older pistols. I have already read about using gun wax to preserve the gun's finish, but wondered if someone could help me out with the holster. Do you spray it down inside with silicone spray, does that take off the gun wax , etc? Thanks.

Easy. Don't put the gun IN the holster, ever.

People need to decide if they buy their guns to look at, or if they want to shoot them. If the former, then no holster even needs to be purchased. If the latter, then wear is going to occur, no matter how "careful" a person is.

I like my guns better after they've acquired some honest "use wear," as that gives the gun(s) more character. ("use" wear is far, far different than "stupid" wear. The first is acquired thru using the gun as intended and building the owner's skills with same. The second happens thru neglect and carelessness)

The number one thing to avoid wear on bluing is to make sure the holster fits the gun very well. The next thing is to keep the holster very clean, no grit or dirt inside.

Holster use is gonna wear bluing, no way around that. As BW posted, the best you can do is to get a holster fitted snugly to YOUR gun and keep it clean. Just don't use a holster for storage.

Brian/Craig,
Thanks for the help. The pistols and holsters are for CCW, so I know there will be some wear. I just like to take care of my stuff and not destroy it.

Bluing wear is not destroying your guns, it's merely use.
I view mine as tools rather than jewelry. :)
Never waxed a gun in 40 years of using them, and holster wear is just a fact of life.

Brian Williams got it right; holster fit is the key.

While inserting and drawing the weapon always involves some friction, the real enemy is movement of the handgun inside the holster during normal activities. A holster that is closely fitted to the weapon will eliminate such movement, thus minimizing holster wear.

For treating the inside of a holster I recommend either neutral shoe polish or Johnson's Paste Wax. These waxes will set up completely, help seal the leather fibers, and provide lubrication at contact points. Neither will harm the leather or your weapon's finish.

LoboGunLeather;
Thanks for the tips. I will do what you say about the wax and I will visit your site to check out your products. I am becmming a new CHL holder and just starting to gear up.

Thank you, Lobo, as well. I will have to try that on my holsters.

dallascj,

Speaking of LoboGunLeather holsters, I give them 2 BIG thumbs up! I use one of their IWB holsters to tote around a ginormous S&W N Frame, a 4" Model 28 Highway Patrolman. Carried it pretty regularly until I had a recent health issue late this past summer, but I'm hoping to start carrying it again shortly. Though I had to dress around the gun, it was reasonably comfortable to carry all day. Great quality, and I paid less than $60 shipped for it.

Just be sure you get the "sweat shield" with yours. It not only adds an extra degree of protection to your gun's finish, it makes the weapon more confortable to carry as it smooths out an otherwise sharp edge (at least as I've experienced with my FIST holsters, 1 with a sweat shield and 1 without ... my Lobo has a sweat shield).

And don't forget a good, stiff gun belt!

BTW, what kind of Tauri will you be carrying? I've got a 3" Taurus 5 shot 44 Special that I might start carrying once I put enough rounds through it. Have to see if Lobo makes an IWB that fits it.

Was that N-frame concealed? Wow! Thanks for the thumbs up on LoboGunLeather. I have 3 revolvers I plan to carry concealed, and 3 j-frame types in my front pocket.
SP101 3"
Taurus 605 3" blued
Taurus 617 2" blued
I just got my Supertuck in today for my Glocks and I think it will work great for them but I am concerned about using Kydex for my blued revolvers.
Can you tell me what you love about .44 Special? I have been think of one for the nightstand/truck and wonder how it compares to the .45LC. I have that in my Backhawk.

LoboGunLeather,
I noticed you don't list my Tauri on your site. Could an Sp101 holster also accommodate the 605? Could a Smith K-frame accommodate my 617?
Would that violate the rule about a snug fit?
