Seattle Democrat Jim McDermott, who took part in the film Farenheit 9/11 and flew to Iraq to oppose using force to overthrow Saddam has a new bit.

In the Seattle Times he charges:

'Everybody in this room who is 17 years old should know that the likelihood of a draft in a second Bush administration is almost a certainty,' McDermott said.

Unfortunately for McDermott, he failed to mention he was the co-sponsor of a bill to reinstate the draft.

Ok Mr. McDermott, please state specifically where Bush stated he'd reinstate the draft.

What a pile of crap.[

Sharpton was pushing the idea of the draft 6-12 months ago fairly hard. I cannot recall the program I saw him on when he was touting it, but it seemed to me that it was merely a means for him to stir up more class warfare issues.

Bush's opponents keep bring up the draft for this reason. It is silly to consider the draft when congress and Bush just recently decided to increase the size of the military, but only by 20k or so.

Common sense (if only politicians would use it) says that first we fund a larger military and if we can't fill it up, we consider a draft.

Charlie Rangel proposed it too

The only people that have been talking about a draft, that I have seen or heard of, have all been Democrats.

I do think it falls under the "Scare a New Group Every Week" strategy they seem to use.

Scare the old people with threatened Medicare "cuts"

Scare the parents with imaginary school funding cuts.

Scare the 18 to 24 years olds with the imaginary threat of a draft so they will all run out and vote for Kerry, and not notice who is really calling for a draft.

Fear mongering is prevalent in both parties.

Do you really think all the sky-is-falling warnings we have had from Tom Ridge are really anything other than fear mongering? The timing on some of the warnings sure seems a little suspicious.

Haven't the dems been saying we'll be at greater risk of attack if we make the radical muslims mad at us...? Well, maybe they're "mad" at us, hence the greater security risk. Oh wait... it must be all politics since its an election year.
