Introduction
Hi,
I just joined the forum today. I am 62-year old retired Union Steamfitter (industrial piping), and I have been around guns all of my life. I was born into a fishing and hunting family, and began hunting pheasant, quail, and rabbits, and squirrels when I was eight years old.
On Christmas Day of 1960, 'Santa' brought me my very own shotgun... a Stevens/Savage 20-gauge, single-shot shotgun. I was finally able to rise above the family 'learning' shotgun, a Mossberg .410 bolt-action shotgun that had 3 shell clip in it.
I hunted with that shotgun for several years afterward, and then in 1971, I bought a used 12-gauge Stevens pump shotgun from a local gun shop. I left my home state of Nebraska for California in 1972, and stopped hunting at that time.
In 1980, I got involved in league-shooting both trap and skeet, and reloading my own loads. That lasted for about one year, until I started my apprenticeship in The Union Pipe Trades. The four years of apprenticeship meant my attending school two night a week for the next four years, so once again, the gun safe was closed and locked up for quite a spell.
In the summer of 1991, my gun safe acquired a new 'resident' a S&W Model 19-3 revolver, with 6-inch barrel. I bought it at a local gun shop , and was told that it was a Law Enforcement trade-in. It's bluing shows slight 'holster wear', and it has it's original wooden, diamond-checkered grips.
In 1996, I got involved in a local CB radio club, and some of their members gathered once a month to shoot trap. I dusted off the 12 gauge and joined in... that lasted for year or two, and then fizzled out.
Some time around the year 2000, I contacted the NRA regarding a handgun training course. Their area instructor contacted me soon afterward, and scheduled me for his next class. About one week before the class, he contacted me again, telling me that the class would been postponed due to personal problems, until a later (unknown) date. He said that I would hear from him once he had a firm date. I never heard from him again, so I just put the pistol back up in the gun safe and forgot about it.
I got the pistol out of the gun safe just the other day, and decided to finally learn how to use it in a safe and proper manner . I have signed up for an upcoming training course at the local shooting range, as I have never fired a hand gun in my life. Rifles and shotguns, yes, but no handguns..a situation that will soon be remedied. I am really looking forward to it!
After that, I hope to finally fire another long-time resident of my gun safe, a 50 caliber black powder rifle that I bought new, back when Gander Mountain was going out of business.
Thank you for your time... Burn Em Up
