New shooter, future owner here.

Hello everyone.

My name is Phil and I live in the gun friendly city of Chicago...

Ok I'm done laughing at that.

I'm looking forward to buying a new firearm in the future and this site looks to be a tremendous help. I'm gonna be purchasing a 9mm soon and was considering the S&W M&P as I read alot of good things about it online and also fired it a few times at the local range.

The one thing I am looking forward to doing is continuing to help out my friends who also have purchased firearms.. I grew up around weapons but being in Chicago we never were able to shoot or own in the city. That changed so now is the perfect time to get back into the range.

I have two questions for the panel so to speak as I have read most of the forums already and was thinking about some things..

1. Should I consider reloading in the future if I plan on burning a couple hundred rounds a week at the range?

and

2. What would be a fun, inexpensive gun to purchase strictly to use at outdoor ranges in the area..

Thanks for any insight!!

CZ Owner, New to forum

To All, I have been a poster on Rimfire Central and "The Original CZ Forum" for about a year. I met an old friend that I worked with at a city in southwest Ohio recently and we were talking about rifles and such. My friend said that he was a long time member of this forum and recommended I check it out. I have and after looking at a couple of postings; I have found another great forum.

As stated before, I live in southwest Ohio, purchased first CZ rifle in April 2010, a 453 American 22lr. My second rifle purchased was a 452 Full Stock 22lr in December 2010. Third rifle purchased was a CZ 527 223 Varmint Laminate this past July. As with any rifle forum, pictures are attached to this post.

My interest in shooting is mostly plinking, target and benchrest shooting. I have a local indoor shooting range for the 22's and I am at present looking for a gun club for some outdoor shooting with the 22's and the 223 rifles.

Please, enjoy the pictures of the rifles that reside in my safe:

On the Varmint rifle, I will be mounting a Hawke Optics Sidewinder 30 Tactical 6.5-20x42 scope. As usual, pics will be posted.

Thanks for letting me join and I know I will enjoy this forum.

Phil, I have about 50 long guns, and about 30 handguns, and I can't determine which one I like the best. But, if you're looking for a long gun to shoot at the range for fun, the Mosin/Nagant model 91/30 in the 7.62x54R cal. is an accurate, fun, inexpensive old military rifle to have & shoot. You can pick them up almost anywhere. J & G Sales has them and they are priced in the $80 to $100 range. If you get yourself a C & R license, (Curio and Relic license), ($30 for 3 years from BATF), you can buy direct from the supplier, instead of a local gun shop, & have them delivered right to your door, and thereby save yourself some money. The ammo is cheap and plentiful. As for a good handgun, easy to shoot, reliable and a fun range gun, (as well as for concealed carry), I like the Czech CZ-82 in 9x18mm Makarov cal. I fits very well in your hand, is an easy shooter, and the ammo is easy to find. It's "sort of" based on the Walther PPK form, but not near as expensive. You can pick one up for around $200. There are SO MANY really good guns out there, that I could go crazy trying to pick out just "1". But these are two of my favorites for what you want to use them for. Good luck and good hunting. Hope this helps a bit. "Hunter"

Hi, I've joined to learn about my guns--inherited from my grandfather--quite a mix--a couple of colt woodsmans, a WWII Walther PPK, 12 gauge Savage 720, Several old Marlin rifles including a 39A, 30-30, and a 38-40, and a bunch of flint locks I've no idea about yet. I've signed up for a shotgun class, and I'll shoot the rifles (not the 38-40) for the first time this weekend at an appleseed event. So much to learn!

Hello, new member intro

My name is Tom Glazier and I am a pharmacist in SE rural Ohio. I am a gun enthusiast, and enjoy hunting and fishing and frequent the target range quite often. I have read many posts on this site, and there is a lot of good information here. I own several rifles, shotguns, and hand guns. I do not consider myself a collector, but enjoy going to gun shows and meeting people. My newest addition is a Keltec PMR-30, a gun I have longed for 2-3 years and finally had the opportunity to shoot one. I also have Colt, Beretta, Taurus, Ithaca, Remington, Marlin, Mossberg, Winchester, Sig Sauer,Mossberg, and Savage....a little of everything. Thanks for having me. My purpose for being here is to get information as well as help answer any questions...something I do everyday at work!

Introduction

Hi,

I just joined the forum today. I am 62-year old retired Union Steamfitter (industrial piping), and I have been around guns all of my life. I was born into a fishing and hunting family, and began hunting pheasant, quail, and rabbits, and squirrels when I was eight years old.

On Christmas Day of 1960, 'Santa' brought me my very own shotgun... a Stevens/Savage 20-gauge, single-shot shotgun. I was finally able to rise above the family 'learning' shotgun, a Mossberg .410 bolt-action shotgun that had 3 shell clip in it.

I hunted with that shotgun for several years afterward, and then in 1971, I bought a used 12-gauge Stevens pump shotgun from a local gun shop. I left my home state of Nebraska for California in 1972, and stopped hunting at that time.

In 1980, I got involved in league-shooting both trap and skeet, and reloading my own loads. That lasted for about one year, until I started my apprenticeship in The Union Pipe Trades. The four years of apprenticeship meant my attending school two night a week for the next four years, so once again, the gun safe was closed and locked up for quite a spell.

In the summer of 1991, my gun safe acquired a new 'resident' a S&W Model 19-3 revolver, with 6-inch barrel. I bought it at a local gun shop , and was told that it was a Law Enforcement trade-in. It's bluing shows slight 'holster wear', and it has it's original wooden, diamond-checkered grips.

In 1996, I got involved in a local CB radio club, and some of their members gathered once a month to shoot trap. I dusted off the 12 gauge and joined in... that lasted for year or two, and then fizzled out.

Some time around the year 2000, I contacted the NRA regarding a handgun training course. Their area instructor contacted me soon afterward, and scheduled me for his next class. About one week before the class, he contacted me again, telling me that the class would been postponed due to personal problems, until a later (unknown) date. He said that I would hear from him once he had a firm date. I never heard from him again, so I just put the pistol back up in the gun safe and forgot about it.

I got the pistol out of the gun safe just the other day, and decided to finally learn how to use it in a safe and proper manner . I have signed up for an upcoming training course at the local shooting range, as I have never fired a hand gun in my life. Rifles and shotguns, yes, but no handguns..a situation that will soon be remedied. I am really looking forward to it!

After that, I hope to finally fire another long-time resident of my gun safe, a 50 caliber black powder rifle that I bought new, back when Gander Mountain was going out of business.

Thank you for your time... Burn Em Up

My name is Jayson from the Live Free or Die state of NH. I grew up overseas where I have shot everything from 4.5mm bb's to Bazookas. I have been in NH since 1997. I have always been a bird hunter and just recently purchased a rifle. The reason I joined this site to get some advice from an obviously smart experienced group of people. By day, I am a marketing executive. I currently own 4 firearms (see signature), next on my list is a .22LR for fun, and a .50cal D.Eagle pistol for collectibility mainly.

I just joined (31AUG11). Am looking to purchase a Glock 20; already have a Colt 38 Super (my long time favorite handgun)...but am looking for a workhorse banger, ergo, the Glock 20. Also looking to use Glaser silver tip defensive rounds in home...so any advice would be appreciated.

Sorry got started yakking and bypassed this post. I'm 49,bald,Italian who is 10 OK 15 lbs over weight, love guns and I'm NOT looking for a date. First love was pistols, which explains why I have over 30, got into AR's and finally building my first(Krieger barrel should be finished any time now), got into suppressors and scopes (still acquiring both), want to start long distance shooting but I cant seem to finish one project before starting three others. Looking to getting some training down the line with the Thunder Beast guys with respect to the long range science. Sooner than later I hope, just need time to get familiar with my 338 Lapua and money(maybe if I stopped buying weapons). I need another safe badly have weapons in two friends safes. I seem to have way too many projects going on at any one time. Shot some IDPA but cant seem to make it a regular thing. I have two reloading presses (Dillon 550 and Forster co-ax) over 50k primers, bullets, powders and brass I cant even count but haven't reloaded 1 shell. What the hell is wrong with me???? Big on 2nd Amendment support and Big Brother staying out of my life and yours. Love my kids, going thru my 2nd AND last marriage. I'm a slow learner but I think I got it finally, I seem to call it like I see it and that doesnt work well. Looking forward to picking some brains and experience. That should do it.

Hello from Upstate South Carolina

I'm new here and glad to find THR. I found this website when doing a google search for books similar to Unintended Consequences and the Enemies trilogy. A member suggested Molon Labe, so I ordered it. Guns, marksmanship, hunting, and military history and theory are my favorite pasttimes. Looks like I'm not alone here. If you are from around Clover, SC I'd especially like to hear from you.

Guns owned:
Rock River AR-15
Springfield Armory 1911
Romanian AK-47
Remington 870
Remington 700 in .300 Win Mag
Glock 26

Hi!
This thread is a place for new THR members to introduce themselves.

Tell us a little about who you are and what kind of gun stuff you're interested in!
WHICH POWDER?
My name is JD and I live in SW Missouri I,m new to gun loading so I have proably about a few thousand questions. So let,s start with my first one which happens to deal with Allliant 2400 smokeless gun powder. The lyman reloading handbook 49th edition, mentions 2400 as a good powder for my 357 mag, and talking with some local gun shops they agree, however modern reloading 2nd edition by Richard lee doesn,t even mention alliant 2400 and only list Herc 2400. I need some loading data for starting loads and max loads for this powder. Also is herc 2400 and alliant 2400 the same powder
