Gun Noob

I am a relative NOOB when it comes to guns. I had a little training in the military (boot camp) years ago but that is far from what is needed for today's society.

I am planning on getting 2 handguns - one for me and one for the wife.

Obviously we need some training but what would be the best to get? NRA sponsored or some other? That is why I am here at THR. To learn and get info.

The guns would be for home defense and CC if desired.

Edit: I was thinking of getting Walther PPS 9mm or maybe a Taurus 709 9 mm. I have seen both and both seem OK to me.

New On THR From Long Island - Not everybody out here is a vapid liberal!

Hello to everybody out there. Been reading as a guest and enjoying several threads. I recently bought an M1 Garand which is going to Orion 7 for a checkout before I pull the trigger. Cant wait to shoot her!

New to THR From Alabama

Thought I would introduce myself, I did some completive shooting in the 80s and 90s but got out of it do to other interest. I kept all of my reloading equipment and doing a little reloading for friends and family along the way. I am now getting back a little more back into shooting and reloading and thought getting on a forum would help get me up to date on things now.

Hey I'm new to the site first names Josh I'm an Army veteran served in Iraq with first ID in the Al Anbar province. I have a great love for all firearms big and small, just recently discovered black powder guns and have been having a lot of fun figuring them out. If you've never messed with one I would advise doing it first chance that you get, the fun per round ratio is fairly high compared to modern firearms lol

Hello everyone, I just wanted to introduce myself.

I live 30 min. from San Bernardino in this most liberal State.

I'm a proud owner of my first handgun, Springfield 1911 Loaded, which is still in jail. (Thanks to Obama I had to buy one before things get tougher.) And I just became an NRA member as well.

Recently completed the NRA FIRST Steps Pistol Orientation, and I plan to attend more classes about home defense & handling shotgun / rifle etc. My father took me to ranges when I was in high school, and I'm trying to make shooting / hunting a serious hobby (I'm in mid 30s btw.)

I hope to learn a lot from you guys & build meaningful relationships!

Welcome aboard! Good community here, lots of knowledge to be had. There's folks on this board that have forgotten more than I ever knew about design, history and maintenance/repair.

The board has been around long enough that most beginner questions have been asked and you can find an answer right away with the search function. But if not, ask away. Just make sure it's in the right forum so you get the people most interested and/or knowledgeable looking at it. For example, revolver versus autoloader.

But anyway, welcome and i hope you enjoy it here as much as I have.

Sounds like an interesting project. A post in the handgun or gunsmithing area should spur some help on your project.

Welcome !

Hello all. New member from Southern California. Got my CA CCW in 2015 and upgraded to Life NRA member. Currently set up for reloading for a .308 Steyr bolt gun and a 6.5 Creedmoor LMT MWS. I used to be a competitive cyclist and pool player, now I run a small dental practice in my town. I'm currently researching modern action 6.5x55 rifles, particularly the Sako Finnlight.

Hello from MD

Long time shooter, mostly factory-level precision bolt guns but carried a rat-a-tat for a while in the Marine Corps and own a decent HBar at the moment. I am obsessively trying to reduce my 600 yard group size using LC once-fired brass. Seems like whenever I have a question that isn't answered already on the MD Shooters forum it turns out to have been discussed here. So I am finally hitching up to the wagon.

Not a new member but I have not posted here in about seven or eight years. It's been a tough seven or eight years :( I recently bought a new gun in anticipation of its eventual end :)

I came to learn of an event that resulted in some other site's creation for whatever reason. Some of this site's regulars seem to have disappeared from both. Is there a sticky or other thread so I can get up to speed on what precipitated it?

Welcome aboard Southern Gentleman81. I'm fairly new to THR as well but am thrilled with the knowledge and helpfulness of the people on here. Best of luck to you.

Introducing myself

Good day fellow firearm enthusiasts,

What to say, born in '60 raised blue collar, firearms have always been part of my life. Not much of a collection, just a rifle and a couple handguns, one recently acquired.

I have a mechanical bent so machines, tools and how they function is a big part of who I am.

I'm a fair shot, better with a rifle than a handgun.

I hope to get to know some of you.

Dave :D

New to this site. I've been shooting guns since the age of 10, I'm 52 now and I have a AK-47, AR-15 and many more guns. I'm trying to find information on "Barrel Twist Rates", and if it's safe to fire certain ammo through my AR-15?

Welcome Sandman

Lots of AR shooter and info here . Post your questions regarding twist rates, etc on the rifle section. You'll find the AR-15 guru's aplenty there.

Hello folks,

Medically retired from a government contractor. Have shot competition in the past. Basically NRA Bullseye Pistol, IPSC, Benchrest and SmallBore Rifle. I'm a retired Tool & Die Maker. And I love most things that go pop, bang or boom.

I used to hunt from August to February. But now I just can't make it. I haven't actually hunted in close to 20 years.

I try to fish. But mainly end up just feeding the fish or getting aggravated.

Hi everyone,

I really enjoy hunting with that said all my guns have been for that purpose. I'm currently in the Marine Corps been active duty for 25 years. I wouldn't mind owning an AR15 once I retire so I have memories of all the lonely nights on deployment sleeping with my rifle instead of my wife. Love to target practice consider myself above average shooter but nowhere near the skill level of a sniper. Born and raised in Maine and once I retire would love to move back. Also I'm in search for an old Winchester model 94 32 special my grandmother bought it for my grandfather after World War II. I don't have the serial number but remember the lever had the initials etched in on the bottom ARD. I would love to be reunited with the rifle after all these years after my uncle sold it 25 years ago.
