New member for a few weeks now!

Hi,

I joined a few weeks ago and am hooked on the forum. I'm new to the hobby and am finding a lot of good information. After not having shot a gun for - oh, 15 years? - I decided this summer to learn how to shoot again. So I dragged myself down to an indoor range in Greensboro, NC where the friendly owner taught me to shoot a Ruger Mark II. While there a member let me shoot her Glock 19. A few months later (August) a friend of mine in Arkansas took me to his range to shoot his M1 Garand, M1 Carbine, and .45 Auto. I was hooked.

So, about three weeks ago I purchased a Ruger 10/22. I love it, but wanted something for longer distances, so last week I picked up - after much research here - a Savage 12 FV in .223. Boy it's fun putting 1" holes in paper at 100 yards!

Now I want (need?) a handgun, and have been seriously considering a Ruger Hunter .22 LR. But I love shooting 9mm's, and today was at another range testing a Glock 17. Liked it a lot, but need to try some more before buying (I have to wait 30 days for my permit anyway, so I have some time).

Anyway, what an addictive hobby! I'm having a blast. (pun intended, I guess).

So, if anyone wants to give me some advice on a 9mm that will be used primarily for accuracy on the range, go ahead an shoot me a message. 9mm Pistols I'm considering include:

1) Glock 17
2) CZ 75B SA
3) Glock 34
4) XD Tactical
5) Beretta 92S

Any thoughts would be appreciated. Again, accuracy on the range is my most important consideration. I won't be carrying, but I think any of these will do for home defense.

I live here on the eastern edge of North Carolina, the next step is England
where gun control unfortunately is the law of the land. I have several weapons, S&W 38+ model 60 with laser, a Taraus ulta lite 38+ also with a laser, Heckler & Koch compact .45, 25 cal. automatic Bretta, and a North American Arms 22magnum. I do have a CCW permit and always carry my 22 mag with me. It's light and fits into my shirt pocket. Depending on my mood. I also carry the 38 or 45. The weight is a factor. In addition I also do my own reloading out of necessity. The hight cost of amunition makes it expeditios to load my own bullets, plus it's a relaxing hobby. I use a Lee turret press for reloading. I am a strong advocate for the Castle Doctrine here in North Carolina where the politicians talk a big talk but do nothing. Maybe some day.

I Just Recently Wanted To Buy A Stock For My 10/22 Ruger. I Went With Dixie Consolidated. After 2 Months Nothing. No Stock And No Refund. I Just Got Riped Off For Over 350.00 Dollars. I Contact The Guys And They Do Not Reply To My Emails.. I Call And They Give Me The Run Around On How It Will Take A Few Day To Refund My Money. But After Over A Week Now Nothing.. Everyone Should Be Careful And Watch Out For This Place Called Dixie Consolidated
 
well 21 years old and have been into firearms since a very young age. my grandfather was a marine and retires homicide detective as well as worked vice.

i love goign out clay shooting as well as just soem regular target practice once in a while to relax from a stressful day at work. (dont know if thats a good think to admit lol)

also im going to be obtaining a CC lisence hopefully soon since i miss how arizona was open carry unlike corperated county's of the seattle area.

my current armerment:
Hi-point 9mm carbine
Hi-Poiont 9mm comp pistol
Mossburg 500 pump 12 gauge (full syn for HD and full cammo for hunting)
Marline tube feel .22LR
S&W .38 (grandfathers old service pistol)
Beretta .22lr pistol
H&R breach break 20gauge

thats it for now. have been looking into a smaller higher caliber revolver like a .38 or 357 for CC.

Just signed on. Looks like a nice place to talk about guns. I am mostly into sporting rifles. I do a fair amount of big game, small game, and bird hunting. I like shotguns and handguns as well but I think I am obsessed with rifles. I enjoy shooting at the range as often as I can and have recently taken up sporting clays. That has been a lot of fun so far. Looking forward to getting in on some of the discussions. Crow
 
been lurking (and occasionaly posting) Im from Norway, sadly no weapons and only ever fired some 22lr rifle (was just 11-12 at the time, competition shooting-course thing-gun range clup, dont know what to call it)

dont own a weapon, definitly plan to. i want to start competition shooting and hunting (both of which are the only valid reasons to own a firearm in norway) so..yeah...

Norway is cold, i dont have guns, i want guns, i like reading about them, looking at pictures (probably because im deprived of general...gun handling o_O)

Hello everyone. I am a disabled Air Force vet and I am a new Texan thanks to Hurrican Rita. I have been married for ten years to one of the sweetest women that once lived in Chicago. I met her on aol.com and we have been in love ever since. We have no children at home with us but have four lovely daughter between the both of us. She has one and I have three girls no boys. We also own a pretty little Pomeranian called Sable. We live in Beaumont, Texas and I belong to the Golden Triangle Gun Club. My favorite pistol is the 1911 and I have a Thompson Custom and a Colt Commander lightweight both 45acp. I also own a Beretta PX4 Storm in 40S&W, a Ruger P84 Mark II, a Bersa Thunder 380acp, a Ruger 22lr competition target pistol with the slabside 6 inch barrel. I am planning on buying a Rock River Arms Tactical 1911 45acp and a Taurus 627 357mag with the four inch barrel. I carry the Thompson or the Colt daily. On special occasions I will carry the Bersa Thunder. My night stand pistol is the PX4 because it has a light attached to its underside. I love reading other gun owners discussions and seeing their in the forums. I hope to enjoy being here and wish to be a productive member. If anyone in my area wants to get together for some range time just pm me and we can set a date. I am flexible because i am retired. Greetings to one and all!!
 
Welcome folks!

The new members that have been reading a while have some sense of the place. The folks that just found us and joined will soon. We all agreed to follow the rules of conduct when we signed up, but it's good to read them from time to time. They're easy to find. Just look up and to the right and you'll see the Forum Rules link beside the THR Library. Essentially the rules can be summed up as keep the discussion civil. ;)

Why? Well there are lots of sites where posters behave in such a manner that it helps the antis further their lies that gun owners can't be trusted and are somehow different from the vast majority of "normal" people in the country. THR is here to show the folks that are undecided and fence sitters on the issue of RKBA that we're just like all the folks they know and trust. We're just like them. We're responsible adults that respect the rights of others and believe that we're just as responsible for our safety as we all are for paying our mortgage/rent, helping our kids with their homework and driving safely. We work to do all those things responsibly, just like them. So, if you can remember that one way to support RKBA is by showing the world that gun owners are responsible people who are taking responsibility for every aspect of their lives you've come to the right place.

The THR Library is a great source of information that everyone can use. Please take advantage of it.

We have new people coming in all the time so we see the same questions asked over and over again. Some folks can forget they were new once too and get a little short with their responses, but there are plenty of folks willing to share information. Searching the various forums will allow you to find if anyone has covered your question before, but if you don't see it don't hesitate to ask. You may be the first one to ask that particular question and we'll all learn from it.

Survival

I’m a novice/rooky gun enthusiast. I’ve shot many but only owned one. It was a cute little 380 auto that served its purpose for my needs at the time, (basically a purse gun for my jump bag when I was a paramedic). I bought the gun from a Vet for cash, off the books, ‘cause I’m a bit paranoid about any Government knowing about my defenses. 15 years later, (long after the loss of that 380), I’m still worried about exposure but still understand the need for American defense.

I am looking to quietly arm my-self again. My questions revolve around survival in an all out war, (or civil), situation. As I understand; It would be better to be armed with weapons that your opponents might use in order to have ample supplies of ammunition and or weapons. This being said I wonder what the most common calibers are, (world wide), so that I might choose weapons that use them.

As I’ve said I’m seriously a rooky in the gun world but; The Beretta 92A (Euro) fits my hand instinctually, (as in the Israeli technique). Then there is the ever popular Uzi that is relatively reliable and very common. Although I don’t prefer the lightweight kick of a Glock, many of those use 9mm too. That, in addition to the US Military use of 9mm, makes me think that the nine might be in the uppermost choices. Then, and maybe foremost, I’m thinking AK-47, (don‘t know that caliber). I’m probably wrong but I’m thinking the AK may be the ultimately foremost automatic weapon in the world and thus easily found rounds/weapons.

After that, assuming my novice choices are correct, I’m thinking 45’s, 38’s and the ever present M-16 (again, what ever caliber that may be). I would appreciate you’re all’s input so that I may have some direction as to how best choose weapons for my “paranoid” scenario.

I was spent my first 23 or so years in Massachusetts with absolutely no firearm exposure aside from some toys and the occasional bow and arrow. Around 2005 I saw a picture of a Springfield Armory XD 9mm 3inch subcompact and thought to myself "Holy **** that is gorgeous, I think I'll read about these firearms now even though they're for imbred hicks of course!" After about a year of reading all things firearm related be it Constitutional interpretations or field stripping a 1911, I moved to Florida where greater freedom was achieved.

From what I read Massachusetts was full of red-tape, waiting periods and all kinds of limitations. When asking another online community various newbie questions I mentioned that I would be moving to Florida in the upcoming months. Instead of doing anything in MA I waited until I was well situated in Florida and met up with a semi-large group of Internet strangers who let me fire their guns.

On my very first day out I shot a CO2 tank powered pelletgun, Walther P99qa, XD 9mm service, Sig P229ct, Kahr P45, Taurus 1911, FN FS2000, Romak-3 and an Enfield. It was quite the learning experience as well as a great introduction to the varied world of firearms.

Several months later I now own a marlin 60 and the XD 9mm service model from one of the guys. I have all kinds of other wacky plans including a Walther P22 (Threaded since I'll be transferring a YHM Mite suppressor eventually) a mosin m44 for kicks and an all purpose 870.

My biggest plan right now is to build a sbr/suppressed AR15 chambered in .22lr with a trijicon reflex sight (with rear/front flip up irons) a magpul ctr stock and plenty of 30 round magazines. It's going to run over $2000 but I really want to build something unique that I can call my own. I highly doubt it will be the first but it's something special I can feel highlights my soon to be growing collection. It's not that I'm trying to be anti-conformist, I just spent several months checking out all kinds of rifles/pistols and concluded that I wanted to build something entirely customized. I've shared this plan with several others who have given me their blessings and others who chided me for building a .22lr AR15.

I decided to sign up here at THR to exchange conversations, opinions and anything else with fellow firearms enthusiasts. Right now my biggest regret in life has been not taken advantage of the rights protected by people I spent mere minutes in History class reading about. It's a damn shame that myself and probably countless others don't realize, understand and respect the sacrifices great men and women of times past have impacted our current civilization.

Newbie

I've been shooting and playing outside most of my life. My parents stressed hard work, self reliance and being responsible for your actions growing up. I hated it then, watching my friends do whatever they wanted but I understand what a gift it was now. I also appreciate the company of others who live life that way.

I recently married and we are going to start a family soon. I have a couple of friends in similar circumstances who share similar interests. We have been seriously discussing emergency preparedness, home defense, etc. for about a year now. This is a first for all of us but recent events spawned some conversations and led to some reading/research which led to more conversations which led to more reading/research. I think we have started the active planning stage of the conversations/research.

I've found a lot of helpful information in the Forums and liked the mindset and friendly nature I've seen so I figured it was time to join in. I look forward to discussing our plans and options with everyone. We don't think that we need to be ready to take on a company size assualt from our houses but do want to be ready for home invastion, natural disaster, civil unrest, etc.

I'm looking forward to getting to know everyone better. Thanks for the great site.

I'm from KS, currently living in IL.

I enjoy cowboy action shooting with guns of the Old West (SA revolvers, SXS shotguns, and lever-action rifles. I have single-shot long range rifles (Browning 95 and Sharps), but haven't had the time to shoot them much.

I hunt big game and small game with guns of the modern era (bolt action Rugers and Winchesters). I haven't hunted upland game birds in a while, but that is mostly because I haven't met any local like-minded individuals.

I prefer to hunt whitetail deer with my .54 cal Hawken repro instead of the slug shotgun mandated here in IL. Handguns are also an option, so I'll be carrying either my Python or Anaconda into the woods this season along w/ my muzzleloader.

My dad always called me ironvic, and it stuck. I shoot handguns mostly and have owned bucketloads of them since the 1970s-mostly because I wanted to get lots of hands-on experience with all types of pistols, revolvers and centerfire rifles, including a lot of milsurp stuff. A lot of them were sold or traded in my quest to learn all about guns.

It started when a SWAT team leader we were assigned to as ambulance personnel (on a Real Bad call) told me to grab his shotgun if he got hit. He showed me how to load and fire a Remington 870 right there in the emergency room then we headed upstairs with the team to get two nurses seriously wounded by a gunman who was still in the building with a hunting rifle. I realized I knew not much about firearms and wanted to learn in case there ever was a 'next time.'

I have enjoyed the shooting sports ever since. My current battery includes a SIG-Sauer P-226 9mm (my favorite pistol of all time), a Remington 870 Wingmaster ex-police shotgun from the same era and configuration as the one the cop showed me how to use (I love it!), a Smith & Wesson 686 Plus in snubbie configuration, a Colt Trooper MK-III 6" .357 Magnum (a tack driver), and an early Winchester 9422 XTR lever gun in .22 LR. Still need to get a good centerfire rifle-deciding on caliber, maybe a non military type as .223 and most current military cartridges are in short supply in time of war.

I've posted a bunch already in the forums-I really like this forum and the group's good manners.
 
hey all, been reading THR posts for a long time, and only today after reading chuck hawks spew (you know the one) oi just had to sign on, if only to take a swing at the old fuddydud.
i got a 9422 win mag, sako 75 hunter stainless 223 rem, kimber montana 7mm08, tikka t3 stainless synthetic 270 wsm, and an 11-87 sportsman 12 guage.
do most of my hunting in the southern alps of new zealand where i live, and mix that up with a bit of gold prospecting.

Hey Folks,

I am a new member but have owned guns for 53 years. During that time I have had quite a variety of both long and short guns. I started shooting at age 12 with a brand new Winchester 20 Ga. Model 37 that my Dad gave me for my 12th birthday. Got my first rabbit that day.:)

That started a long love of hunting and shooting I still love today. I have about 47 guns of one type or another today and would not want to part with a single one of them. Some are new, some are old, all are great.

My 2 very best are the Mod. 37 and and a Remington Mod 521-T that will still hold a dime sized group at 100 Yds.

That's enough about me. I'll just hang aroung for a while and read some of the posts. I'm retired so should have the time to jump in any time.

I am new to the forum. I am a retired CW4 from the United States Army. I flew Blackhawk’s and have been flying as a commercial pilot for the last six years.
