Hello,

I am a new member, I live in Utah and I am also new to the firearms. I just applied for my CCW on May 1st and got my first handgun a week after that. I got a Taurus millenium Pro 745, I really like it and I am looking to get a G26. I have take 2 training clases on hadguns one basic and one advance, very good classes.

I am not currently a gun owner. I live in South Carolina and i am doing my homework because i want to be able to protect myself, my wife my home, and my future family.

Funny thing is. My wife used to want a gun..and I didnt. Because i was afraid of the thought of her with a gun. She was going through a super paranoid phase at the time and even had a butcher knife under the pillow for a few weeks.

She has sense then calmed down a bit, i brought up buying a gun a couple months ago, and now she doesnt want a gun...and now i am getting a little bit more concerned about our general protection.

I'm definitely not looking to stock up for a zombie invasion. But i do want us to have at least 2 (ideally 3) weapons that we can both shoot and defend ourselves with effectively..

right now, since i think because we are not exactly financially stable yet, it would be wise to invest in a couple of very inexpensive guns for home and car until we are both comfortable and trained enough for concealed carry..Hopefully once i get my wife comfortable enough, we can both get a couple of concealed carry pieces too.

Right now for starters, im trying to spend under $400. Just for some functional defense weapons that we can take to the range up the street with us and learn.

after much much lurking on this and every gun forum on the web...I have pretty much settled on a EAA Windicator 357 Magnum 4"inch barrel, and a hi point c-9 just to get use acquainted with automatic weapons. Plus inexpensive gun, inexpensive ammo allows us to get a 2nd effective gun for little money.

Hopefully that should just run me a bit over $300, and once we know what we are doing and get our permits, we can get a pair of carry pistols.

hello well armed lamb, you say you work in forensic i am starting my criminal justice classes next month,i was wondering if you could help me in this area sometimes.

Hola

Hey guys this is my second post now on here and I'm excited to have joined. Anyways I own a few guns including my newest purchase a Glock 19. Love it. This seems like a good site with a lot of info and a lack of ****** bags that seem to fill every other forum on the internet. :)

Happy Shooting,
Josh

In regards to you 400$ limit you could buy a lower end mossberg or remington. Buckshot would be ideal for close quarters home defense. Shotguns are fairly low maintenance making them a good gun chioce for a novice.

BTW my name is Nick I am about to start college on an ROTC scholarship. I own a CX4 berretta storm carbine and a .22 bolt action mossberg. I live in the northeast not exactly the greatest place to be a gun owner. I hope to learn alot from this site and meet other gun enthusiast.

hey Nick, thanks alot for your suggestion. I reallly appreciate it. I actually ran through that a few days ago, and had actually started pricing, but then changed my mind..i was going to get the 357 mag and a maverick 88 security.

but there were several reasons i thought 9mm would be more practical for us as a second instead of 12 gauge, taking my wife into consideration.

1. the potential for the weapon to be taken away easier.
2. the damage caused by the weapon when discharged in a home
3. If someone is in your home and anywhere in the vicinity or direction of your loved ones. you dont want to be firing buckshot in that direction.
4. heavy bang and recoil.
5. need something that my wife can be comfortable with shooting as well, so she will need to practice. I also want her to get used to firing a 9mm caliber so eventually when we are able to get a concealed carry weapon we both will have had some experience.
6. easy to grab, easy to store
7. and there is an indoor pistol only range right up the street from us.
8. wanted us both to get familiar with shooting and maintaining both revolver and automatic handguns.

once again thanks...i still might end up with a 12 gauge in the near future lol.

Well make sure you buy jacketed hollow points for your 9mm they dont richochete and wont penetrate multiple walls meaning your nieghbors are safe. Hollow points are also more accurate and do considerably more damage to a human target. I'd suggest a revolver for self defense since you can always leave them loaded where as if you keep a semi auto magazine full 24/7 you will wear down the magazine springs. Then god forbid the round might not make it all the way into the chamber causing a jam at not the most opprotune time. Revolvers are also more reliable and easier to familarize yourself with the mechanics. I know with my carbine what I do is only leave 3 rounds in my clip since i know its highly accurate and this is plenty to get the job done. Course about the whole springs thing i could just be paraniod since if i even breath on either of my guns the whole thing gets a swipe of my silicon cloth.

thanks again Nick, i definitely didnt know that about not leaving an automatic fully loaded and wearing down the springs..thanks alot for that tip.

but yeah, i want to know as much as possible before taking the plunge...just like my reasoning for getting guns in the first place, "better safe than sorry"

haha funny thing is, about a year ago i watched "Alien vs. Predator" and there was a line when a female character was asked why she was packing a gun...

and she responded "better to have one and not need it, than to need one and not have it"

to this date, i think thats the best argument for arming yourself i have ever heard.

Larry here. Been "lurking" for a while and finally got around to joining in. I have been around firearms of one sort or another all my life. I'm a Navy veteran, (Submarine Service) gave Uncle Sam 12 years and decided it was time to actually watch my kids grow up.

Interesting discussion about penetration. Here is an interesting site that answers a lot of common questions...

Indie apply for your concealed carry and safety course now since it can take months for your permit. By then you will be have figured out which firearm you want to purchase.

czbegenner -- depends on what you're looking for. I'm not LEO; I just work with/for police sometimes. Lately I do more international stuff. Drop me a PM if you've got any questions; just change your settings so I can PM back.

I'm Kevin from VA. Also a regular on a couple other gun forums. I'm 26. I bought my first gun, a Glock 17, in early 2005. As quickly as a I could I learned the laws, took a class, and got my CHP. I've since collected a G26, a 1911, and a Raven for teaching new shooters. I'm a VCDL member as of last month, which I'm very excited about.

Off the range, I like to ride my Polaris Scrambler, pretend to play guitar, listen to music, read, go to the beach, and spend time with amazing girlfriend who says she doesn't like guns but loves me enough to tolerate them. We went to dinner Thursday night and I open carried for the first time. We met up with a group of other open carriers and she kept sneaking a peak at what everybody had. She's getting into the sport of shooting herself. She regularly out-shoots me with my own BB gun. Baby steps!

I found this forum from a link for Tuner's SA torture test and thought I'd continue to check it out.

209 here

I've been lurking in the background for quite a while. I found my way here from The Firing Line and the Law Dog Files. I retired from the military with 22 years of service (USMC and Army NG). I'm currently nearing retirement as an LEO. Firearms seem to be a constant in my life as I started shooting competitively at the age of 12.

I can actually remember when you could bring your rifle to school and store it in your locker so you could practice after school with the rifle team.

I am currently my PD's firearms and tactics instructor. Looking forward to the discussions here.

Newbie shooter

Hello everyone. I'm new to shooting (kinda) and found this board while researching the sport. I was introduced to shooting when I was about 12, going to the range and shooting cans with my dad. Shot a little bit in high school with Eagle scouts, but hadn't touched a firearm in 20 years until last week when I took an NRA basic handgun safety class. I think it may have awoken that long-slumbering gun nut in me, because now all I can think about is what to buy next.

The thing that motivated me to get back into shooting, is the group of bills being considered by the Illinois legislature to ban certain guns and gun parts they consider "scary". High-capacity mags, .50 calibers, etc. Their legislation, which hasn't passed the House yet, exempts anyone who owned a prohibited device prior to the effective date of the law. So this week I purchased my very first gun, a Glock 17, and took it to the range today and put my first 50 rounds through it. I'm thinking about getting some used AR15 mags, even though I don't have an AR15, in case I want one someday.

The ironic part is that had they not introduced this legislation, I probably would not have bought a gun. They've driven another neutral party into the ranks of their enemies.

Anyway, I'm looking forward to many range sessions. I'm currently working my way through the NRA Handgun qualifications.

Welcome to THR, Blackbeard. You have accomplished two very important things. (1) You have become aware, and (2) you have joined THR which is, in my opinion, the premier gun board in cyberspace. I hope your time spent at the range and on this forum will bring the warm fuzzies to you for a very long time.

By the way, newbies are, by decree, required to supply a box of ammo and beer to all the rest of the members. I'll take mine in .357 mag and I'd much prefer a Mountain Dew. Thanks.

I would like to encourage you to go to The Faces of THR and The Jobs of THR and leave your mark in each of those threads as well.

Welcome to THR, im sure you will find this forum to be a great resource as I have. Glad to have another soul on our side, keep up the good struggle.

I'm returning to the shooting sports after a long layoff. I'm older, heavier, and unfortunately, just a bit wiser. I can't believe how the sport has changed in 30 years and how little I actually learned back then. Tom Gresham, Olig Volk, this forum, and the web in general are helping me learn more in months than I had in previous years.

My interest are in target shooting, Cowboy Action Shooting (maybe), Second Amendment preservation, and self-defense.

Hello all. New here, introducing myself...

I have been an avid shooter since I was 12 years old. Started carrying for self-defense about 5 years ago. My carry firearm is a Para-Ordnance LDA P12.45. I carry in a black Galco Fletch (High Ride) holster.

I live in the great state of Virginia and open carry wherever legal.

hello to every one out here. A great friend of mine told me about this forum a while ago (thanks JTW) and i have been kinda lurking. Well started posting tonight to see how things are here. Been a knife and Gun collector for years, but as of late it's been more of a gun thing. I live in Portland and was running the Handgun silhouette matches at one of the local clubs till last month. I had 2 disc removed from my neck 6 week ago so trigger time has been missed. Yesterday I purchased a 10/22 to build to help Keep me busy until I am back out there, any sugestion would be great. If your in the area and want to shoot let me know!!!.

Greetings all. I actually found THR via some of Oleg's pictures. Been lurking forever but couldn't resist chiming in on the "text-based gunfight".

I've been shooting forever in the, "Boy go kill that groundhog/crow/whatever that's been eating the garden" mode. Most recently I'm really, really pissed at the VT administration and visit the campus, armed, whenever possible. I hope to get the rules changed by maybe changing some attitudes.

THR seems to be a good place to discuss changing attitudes in the most gentlemanly way possible.

Regards,

Clint

Hi everyone - new to the boards - I've been an avid shooter since I was about 5. I enjoy skeet and trap and target shooting.
