New. SO new. So very new.
I'm Kat; new to the board, relatively new to shooting (I don't think shooting BB guns at my after-school program in elementary school, shooting .22 rifles at camp in middle school, and shooting a friend's handguns a couple times really counts as any sort of experience at all. But at least I have an idea of what gun safety entails, unlike some of the horror stories I've read here, so perhaps I'm only a mostly-n00b...?)
Browsing like crazy. Have a ton of questions, etc. The usual stuff. It's just that I'm 26 years old and feel it's way past time for me to really learn to shoot...where have I been all my life??? Unfortunately I don't really have someone who can teach me how--moved away from my original hometown a little over a year ago and don't know anyone around here. So I feel like a fish out of water and rather like I haven't any business trying to learn to shoot if I haven't anyone to teach me (short of blowing all of my savings on all the classes I can get my hands on...which I'd love to do but isn't very practical for my budget). Y'know, I don't want to be "that guy" who goes to the range without a clue what they're doing and not many ways to find out. My partner also has some interest in learning with me--it's his friend who has the handguns and they've gone shooting together several times and I think he's interested in it, but would be more likely to act on it if I took the initiative (he's already said if I take a CCW course he wants to take it too. Not sure if he's also interested in gun ownership or not).
So, I'm here to do all the learning I can so I don't spend all my time annoying the people I do know with every question on the book (i.e. my partner's friend and the firearms instructor at my workplace, who's super-nice and super-helpful, but I can only badger him so much!). But I sure do have a lot to learn...mostly I feel like a gun for me would be like my car: it and I need to be partners, and I need to know as much as possible about it before I mess with it too much. I never wanted to be that person who is surprised to learn one has to change the oil in one's car, and I don't want to be that person who doesn't know how to clean their gun or how it works.
I've learned a lot already by reading here and on the 'net, and am looking forward to more as I continue. And someday I'll have enough saved up for a class or two, a CCW permit, and a little .22 revolver. Tomorrow we're headed to a gun show just so I can get an idea of what's out there and prices, and maybe pick the brains of some of the dealers there too.
