New Model Single Six lr/mag conversion?

I have a Ruger single six 22 new model 6" barrel that has the .22lr cylinder in it. It did not come with a 22 mag cylinder as far as I know. How big of a deal is it to get a .22 mag cylinder for this gun assuming it is possible?

Serial # is 261-04117.

Thanks for any advice! I don't know that I necessarily want to do it, but if it is cheap and easy it would be great to have the capability as long as it would be easy to go back and forth.
 
If the gun did not come from the Ruger factory with the extra cylinder (as opposed to, say, an original extra cylinder getting lost), Ruger will not make one. You can obtain a magnum cylinder from a private party or gun parts vendor, but the gun and cylinder have to be fitted individually to each other so it will index correctly on all the chambers. Again, Ruger will not do this, so you will have to find a qualified gunsmith.

Or, sell or trade it for a convertible model.
 
If you have the correct box, the label will indicate if it was shipped as a convertable. Most all NM Single Sixes came as a convertable. Oh, the bbl is 6 1/2" not 6". Gotta include that which is inside the cylinder frame too.

Call Ruger's records dept. with the serial # and they can tell you how it shipped.
 
By your serial # the gun was produced in 1985. In looking at the '85 catalog, all Single Sixes were indeed convertables.
 
IIRC a mag cyllinder would require some fitting before being safe , About any compentent revolver smith should be able to do it tho assuming you can find a mag cyllinder
 
The mag cylinders usually drop right in with no problem, occasionally you'll run into one that doesn't fit right up but then you can just sell it for what you paid and move on. You can almost always find one on Ebay (new rules may change that) Auction Arms or Gunbroker, or just ask here in the wanted forum.

If you would prefer the factory to do it, simply give them a call for a job number, send it in and you're done. While it's there they will give it a full function test and make sure it's all squared away. Beware that any aftermarket parts will be removed and replaced with stock if you send it in for anything. They do offer a dirt cheap refinishing service if you're sending it in anyway.
