I already had a Mossy 500 for HD, but She Who Must Be Obeyed fell in love with it, and claimed it as her OD (Office Defense) gun. (Gotta love that girl!) This meant I had to have a new one for the house, of course! Above is what fulfilled that need.

Here is the web page I created showing what I bought and how I put it together, as well as pricing and sources.

All comments are welcome!

Thank you for posting the details! This thread could not have come at a better time for me. I just found a really inexpensive Mossy that I'm planning on picking up, but I didn't like that it comes only with a pistol grip and no stock. I'll probably end up picking up some of the same parts you did. :)

Very nice! I definitly taking a look at this.

But what about just having the Mossberg 500 Special Purpose Tactical (50420)?
The whole thing is about $340 to $350.

Thanks, everyone, for the compliments!

Wildchild: Actually, I have the very shotgun you mention, shown here at the top:

It is the gun to which SHE has laid claim! I bought it from Classic Arms for $279.95. Classic now has them for $269.95! My new one added up to $274.85 - basically the same price for the same gun, except with higher mag capacity and a 20" barrel instead of 18.5".

My total outlay of $434.83 was for everything including the TLR-1, rail mount, all shipping, and transfer.

And Dave, you're very right: It most definitely needs wear marks on it! I will endeavor to correct that promptly!

Those are all very cool, however, my only comment would be that the heat shield serves no real purpose other than add weight to your shotgun - it might be a bonus for you lightweight 500 owners with the thinly-padded M4-style stocks

great web site

Your website is excellent.

I just put together a similar Mossy a couple of months ago - starting with the Special purpose tactical, added the same light mount and the ATI heatshield (which comes with ghost ring sights) and a M6 laser/light combo.

what are the advantages of the 'telescope' collapsible stock versus the side folding locking stock?

I've had a locking side folder on my mossy 500 for many years. Its very solid and looks to be smaller when collapsed that the one you picked.

what are the advantages of the 'telescope' collapsible stock versus the side folding locking stock?

The collapsible stock came from the factory on my original Mossy, and I found it to be solid, low-profile, and very comfortable under recoil. It has a fairly wide range of adjustment too, and is compact when fully forward.

When deciding on a stock for the new 500, I gave it a LOT of thought. I read with great interest the many excellent comments from very experienced shotgunners here on THR and elsewhere. Many advocate a standard stock on any shotgun, especially with the location of the Mossberg's safety. I took their wisdom very seriously, and considered putting a Speedfeed stock on it. However, after a lot of consideration, I decided on the collapsible due to the things I liked about it and mentioned above, as well as to maintain consistency between both guns, and the fact that my significant other may have to use it, making the adjustability an added plus.

I see the point about how any pistol-grip stock makes the Mossy safety impossible to reach while maintaining one's hand in a true, ready-to-fire position. I found that I can easily operate the safety from a modified position though, and still pull the trigger if necessary. After thinking about the various options, and actions necessary should the SHTF, and given the primary purpose of these guns as home/office defense, the safety isn't a concern, as I decided to maintain them with the safety off, hammer forward (uncocked) and empty chamber. This means all I'd have to do is pump and fire. No need to fool with any small parts like the safety button or action lock while in a stressful situation.

where did you get the mount for that light on the new gun?
i have a similar 500 that ive been looking to add a light to and all i can find are the surefire replacement forearms

LaserLyte Tri-Rail mount

where did you get the mount for that light on the new gun?
Here's the LaserLyte mount I have except I caught it on Gunbroker for $17.00 from this same seller. Looks like he's out of them right now.

Alternate link: Laserlyte Online Store

Alternate products:
Insight CFL-900 Costs a lot more than the LaserLyte, and seems to be a lot longer.

Streamlight 69903
Streamlight 69901
(There are probably other sources for these mounts too; I just happened to find this place.)
These mounts are inexpensive. I think they're nylon, not aluminum. One reviewer said they had to mount them off of vertical due to the placement/angle of the screws.

I hope this helps!

The heat shield can't weigh more than one ot two rounds of 00buck. My 590 without the HS weighs about 7.25lbs, and it weighs about 7.25lbs with it.

Try some weapons transtions. You'll wish you had a heatshield at least once. I can take a little burn here and there, but I'd rather avoid it.
