Was at the local gun show today and this little NIB Ruger caught my eye immediately at one of the tables. I walked it off and continued my path of browsing gloriously throughout the aisles, but that GP100 would not leave my mind. So, I went back and after some dickering around with the seller, I got it for $400 out the door. So now I'm the proud owner of a GP-161! Howd I do?

P.S.
:confused:I can't for the life of me depress the "Trigger Guard Lock Plunger". Any advice to easily remedy this, short of using a screwdriver & hammer?

Appreciate all the help and info yall can give me!

Very nice! I picked up this 3" blue gp100 for $320 a few days ago. I am very happy with it. Kinda makes me want a 6"er :D GP100-unholstered.gif

Regarding the plunger, thats the only way i managed to get mine out. put the grip tang in a vise and had to beat the dang thing out lol thats one tight little spring in there

According to the Ruger manual, you should be able to use the top of the main spring assembly to pop the trigger group off.

Page 18, figure 8.

As always, what Ruger says and what's required sometimes don't match.

Good luck.

I just broke mine down with instructions via a you tube video. The guy in the video used a screwdriver to get it off. I also used a screwdriver and it worked fine. I had to push pretty dang hard too. And to get it back on a tap with a wooded mallet was needed.

cleetus, you did fine! now go shoot it!

Okespe04,

nice blued 3"er. don't see many of those.

Use a screwdriver the first time. Then polish the "ramp" fot it in the grip frame and the stud lightly, and put a tiny drop of oil on the plunger/stud before reassembly.

After that it will come out without being such a beast.

Price-wise you did great(for around my neck o' the woods anyway)

It would be the plunger that you press to remove the trigger group from the frame to facilitate field stripping the revolver.

This plunger gets easier after the revolver is stripped a few times. I seem to remember having to use a screwdriver the first few times i field stripped the one I had.

Nothing to do with an internal lock system.

You did fine indeed

I paid $475 last summer, although mine is stainless. You shouldn't have that much trouble with the plunger. I've encountered that on other guns and the problem has always gone away through the friction of use. Annoying but not a serious issue.

I got my 4" stainless in 95% condition last month for $299 from a local gun shop that was clearing out guns from a security firm. I feel like I did astonishingly well. I think you did just fine - those 6" guns sure "hang" well for making distance shots.

Traded an old Yugo SKS (cost me $225 when I bought it) for this blued 6" a month ago. Ruger's serial number lookup says it was made in 1986...looks pretty good for it's age, and shoots even better. I like it for the short lug and old style grips, tried the new ones and they just don't feel right to me.

I appreciate all the help and comments! I finally had time to take another crack at that plunger. With the help of a little hammer tap to a Flathead, it came out no problem.

The trigger pull right now is pretty damn hard & gritty. But I know after I run a few hundred rounds and dry-fire the hell out of it everything will smooth out!
