won a new 870 12 gage express, thought about selling it due to it has the choked 26" barrel and I dont bird hunt, then I thought, wait a minute, I have no great knowledge of shotguns, but I remember these guns are very customizable. Im sure there have been tons of threads on this gun, but is there anyone on here that could maybe make a few suggestions on good pricing, locations and sites? someone whos taken a new gun and made changes? the one I have looks like the standard model with the ribbed 26" barrel. fake wood stock, fore grip is real wood I think, would like a shorter barrel, extended mag, maybe a more aggressive stock, pictures would be great, Im a real newby with shotguns, dont wanna hang a bunch of stuff on it, just simple more tactical look

You can buy an 18 or 20 inch barrel and a magazine extention from MidwayUSA and be all set. You will have to drill out the retention dimples in the magazine tube but that is a simple operation and I am sure one of us will be glad to coach you through it.

A side-saddle ammo carrier, ghost ring sights, stock w/pistol grip, and if you really want to go all out a SureFire fore end.

Buy an 18 1/2" CYL or I/C barrel with a simple bead (directly from Remington Parts), add a 2-shot extension (I prefer Wilson), a sidesaddle, a simple light and a short, standard, LOP stock (such as a Remington LEO, or Hogue), and you are GTG.

I prefer to grind out the dimples with a Dremel. I have an 18" parkerized Rem IC choked barrel with bead sight, if you would like it PM me. Also I like the factory 2 shot extension which is available from midwayusa.com

You asked for pictures so here goes. This started out when my stock cracked. 18 inch police barrel, +2 extension, mesa adapter with houge grip and magpul ctr stock.

I got the light and mount real cheap. You can sell your Remington for enough to buy a tacticool model and have a some change left.

This is my Maverick 88, 20" 8 shot model. I got the light from ebay pretty cheap. It's a 500 lumen light. I just ordered a 1600 lumen light off ebay - it should be here in a week or so.

Something does not add up. A 26" Express should have interchangeable tubes, not a fixed IC barrrel. What is fake wood? Most 870 Express guns have either hardwood stocks, laminated wood or synthetic in black or camo. 10-15 years ago I did see a few made specifically for K-Mart with wanut.

If it has Remchokes, selling the barrel is a good option as they have some value. A fixed IC has some, but less. You could sell the factroy barrel and buy a replacement for very little money.

You could also hacksaw it right on one of the ribs and cut it down to 23"-21", or 19" depending on which rib you cut on for virtually no money. I've done several at 21". If I messed up I had enough barrel for a 2nd attempt and still be legal. Cut, and use a file and square to true up the end of the barrel. It is a 5 minute job. Never had a problem, all function and pattern great even with slugs. I use one of the front sights that clamp onto the rib as a replacement sight.

Stevolene,

You might try poking around this web site: http://www.aiptactical.com/. There's a lot of common sense information in one place. I just went through the same process you're contemplating.

Also, I'd suggest the sticky On Fighting Shotguns at the top of this section. Lots of sound advice.
