Gee this is kinda interesting...

Savage has a new little rifle they call the "Walking Varminter" - a bolt action scaled down proportional to the size of typical varmint calibers like .223, .204 Ruger, etc. - and 5.7x28.

Say what? 5.7x28... in about a 22" barrel bolt gun?

I bet that'd be fun to shoot when I'm about 70 years old... maybe useful too.

What's that cartridge gonna do in a long barrel compared to, oh... .22 Hornet?

What's the prospect for ammo availability for this cartridge?

Any reason you can't reload for it?

(Maybe someone will pick up on the idea and make an M4gery too? Would that be fun?)

you can reload for 5.7, but I have heard it is very sensitive to powder overcharges. They make an AR upper in 5.7 that takes ps90 mags and ejects shells through the existing magwell. Also, cmmg is making an AR upper that loads from the bottom and looks a bit more like a standard AR.

Also, if you think about it, the commercially loaded stuff isn't really that expensive. Everybody compares the price to 5.56 fmj's. The thing is, they are hornady VMAX bullets. You tell me where you can find 50 5.56 or .223 loaded with vmax bullets for 20 dollars.
