Hey guys ive been looking over your site for the last wi or so and thought it would be a great knowledge base to lean on. So I live in New York where the Dec just opened up deer season to rifle. Ive never owned or even shot a center fire rifle but am an avid shotgun Hunter. I purchased a t/c venture.270 and for now I'm using 130gr corlokt or hornady sst they both giving me moa. Am I on the right track or do ya'll wanna smack me in the head?

.270 should be an excellent round for deer around here. Since you are now using a rifle just make sure that you keep an eye on what is behind the deer. The reach will be significantly longer. Good luck out there and stay safe.

The corelokt will work great on deer. No experience with the other ammo.

Make sure you sight it in to verify the scopes still on, the week before you hunt.

For me, I prefer the SST. I shot a deer last season with the .270 Win, using Hornady SuperFormance, 130 grain SSTs. The shot was taken at about 205 yards, and the deer never twitched...DOA.

Well geno's post is good enough for me. Use whichever shoots the best in your rifle.

Ive used the ssts for a few yrs but they seem to get wild near 200 so i used em for 100 range but this yr I got some fields on a side hill

A few yrs ago I cut open a 12ga sst to see how it can touch 200yds and found its a .50 with a hell of a sabot. They shoot great to about 150-175 then go where they want to go

Sight it in 1.5-2" high at 100 yards and you will be only about 3-4" low at 300 yards. That gives you a very usable range. If it is inside 300 just aim right at it. It is always a good idea to practice so that you will be confident at those ranges. A .270 will drop any deer on the planet if you hit it right. Good Luck.

Fremmer's right, try both, or even others and go with the best grouping. FWIT, Winchester's Supreme Bonded ammunition hits like a brick. I used that in my .308 Win, and wow! The effect was not immediate like the SST, but held together and penetrated unbelievably well. Be sure to test them at the distances you propose to harvest your game animal.

In full disclossure, there are folks who report that the SSTs were horridly inaccurate in their firearm.

I use 130 grain Core Lokts in my Thompson/Center Encore 270 Winchester and with handloads get well under 1 MOA. I've taken 3 deer with mine; all DRT. They do a fine job on groundhogs and crows as well.

I use Sierra 168 grain spbt gamekings by federal, very accurate and they hit them hard.

And the TC Venture is a neat rifle too. Enjoy yourself out there!

Good rifle. Good caliber. Good ammo. You did really well to have just begun hunting with a centerfire. Good luck in the woods.

Great set up. The 130 grain weight in .270 was Jack O'Connor's favorite, wrote many pages in "Outdoor Life" about it, and mad the .270 a forever favorite to many. You really can't do any better in a deer rifle.

Pick the load that is most accurate. It don't take a magic bullet for deer.

Around here, I think 270 is second only to .30-'06 for most common rifle cartridge. That T/C is a fine weapon. You're starting with as good a setup as some people who have been rifle hunting for decades.

I was headed out to pick up a 700 and they didn't have any in .270 but i liked the feel of the t/c so I got it then went home and read the reviews assbackward I know but the feel is 90% of a good gun

The wife and I are both shooting .270. I started out with 150g handloaded Speer SP Boat-tails. Then I loaded up 130's for the wife. Since I loaded about 100 of the 150's, I still have quite a few left. But next time I decide to load again, I am going to step down the 130's.
